Angel Fierro is scheduled to return in Mexico next month, his first fight since withdrawing from an Isaac Cruz rematch during fight week after being hospitalized due to weight-loss issues. The junior welterweight contender will next face compatriot Abr...
Angel Fierro is set to return to the ring Oct. 4 when he headlines a Bxstrs Promotions show in Tijuana, Mexico, against compatriot Abraham Cordero (15-6-2, 8 KOs).
The occasion marks the first time “Tashiro” Fierro (23-3-2, 18 KOs) will be fighting following his July weigh-in day debacle just ahead of his scheduled rematch against Isaac Cruz.
Fierro was forced to withdraw from the fight and was hospitalized for observation after he endured health issues during his weight cut.
"We're going to try to get him back in shape, and it will be like starting all over again with me,” Robert Garcia, Fierro’s trainer, told The Ring. "We lost out on a great payday, an opportunity against a big name. But I pulled him out of the fight because he was doing really bad with his weight cut.
“He wasn't ready, and his body wasn't going to respond. It could have gotten worse in the ring. I'm always going to take care of my fighters before anything else. I want my fighters to go home safely to their families instead of calling them to come visit them at the hospital.
"I will never let that happen. Pulling him out of the fight was the best decision we could make at the time.”
Fierro and Cruz fought to a Fight of the Year contender in February, but the former ended up on the wrong end of the cards in a war that featured a combined 1,410 punches. Cruz landed 248 to Fierro's 238.
When Fierro pulled out of the rematch, Cruz ended up facing and beating late-replacement opponent Omar Salcido Gamez by unanimous decision on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Mario Barrios fight.
Cruz is next set to take on Lamont Roach Jr. later this year.
