Omar Trinidad passed the toughest test of his career last month, beating former titleholder Jerwin Ancajas by unanimous decision.
The featherweight contender believes he’s now ready to take another step up in competition by facing IBF titleholder Angelo Leo.
“I heard there is a big date on September 12, and there is a champion out there at featherweight who needs a dance partner. So, with all that said, Angelo Leo, what's up champ – let's dance,” Trinidad said after beating Ancajas in the co-main event of Zuffa Boxing 08 in Las Vegas.
“To the top baby. Angelo Leo, I am coming for you – let's go.”
Trinidad (21-0-2, 14 KOs) is certainly in prime position to be calling for a clash against Leo, with intent to land on the undercard of the event slated to be headlined by the bout between WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn in Las Vegas.
Trinidad, a 30-year-old Los Angeles native, is ranked No. 2 by the IBF; the No. 1 slot is vacant.
The IBF, however, appears to have other plans for Trinidad. That entails facing Luis Reynaldo Nunez (24-0, 16 KOs), who is ranked No. 3, in a title eliminator.
Trinidad and Nunez’s availability to participate in a fight to determine the No. 1 spot was requested this week by the IBF. Still, they’ve not yet been ordered to negotiate, an IBF spokesperson told The Ring on Friday.
Leo (26-1, 12 KOs), meanwhile, hasn’t fought since outpointing Tomoki Kameda in the first defense of his belt in May of last year in Japan. Leo, a 32-year-old from New Mexico, won the IBF title by viciously knocking out Luis Alberto Lopez in August 2024.
Leo was supposed to face Ra'eese Aleem on May 9, but Aleem failed to make weight for their fight.
