Former 154-pound titleholder Tim Tszyu has high hopes for himself when he faces WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara on December 13 in Australia.
Tszyu (28-3, 18 KOs) versus Lara (32-3-3, 19 KOs) will headline a No Limit Boxing show at Cbus Super Stadium in Gold Coast on DAZN, which will take place Dec. 12 in the United States.
"Lara is just about the challenge," Tszyu told the Australian media. "It's something to get out of bed for. If you want to be immortal in this sport, there are certain things that you have to do and this is one of them, and that's fighting Lara.
"Coming here for my third stadium show is something different. You dream of these certain moments as a young kid, and it's happening over and over again. I'm truly grateful for it."
Tszyu is having a tremendous 2026 due to his clear-cut, unanimous decision against former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence in July during his middleweight debut. The victory was the third in a row for the second-generation star following his second loss to Sebastian Fundora in July 2025. Tszyu, 32, also beat Denis Nurja seven months ago and Anthony Velazquez in December of last year.
"I had a belief. Eighteen months ago I lost against Fundora and I made big changes in my life and in my career," said Tszyu, who also lost by third-round demolition against Bakhram Murtazaliev in defense of his 154-pound IBF title in October 2024. "But I was so adamant that I was going to achieve the next chapter of my career. And I went on this journey. It was a lifelong journey through all the trouble, the hardships. But we got here.
"We recently just beat one of the great fighters of all time, Errol Spence. And now, we're here chasing a second division title at middleweight to be stamped forever in the history books in Australian sporting history. It's a blessing."
Lara is certainly no steppingstone, but the crafty southpaw is also 43 and well past his prime. Lara last fought in December of last year and scored unanimous decision win against Johan Gonzalez.
Gonzalez was a late replacement, subbing in for Janibek Alimkhanuly, who tested positive for a banned substance and was scrapped from the title unification fight in the week of the contest.
The sequence allowed Tszyu to make a name for himself at 160 pounds by beating Spence and luring in the Cuban Lara for a fight on unfamiliar ground on a different continent.
"I'm putting it all on the line. I got all of Australia behind me. I'm pretty blessed for that, and to be doing it here on the Gold Coast, it's even better," Tszyu said. "I think this is the biggest show for myself and No Limit, to be putting on such a spectacle here. It's a blessing."
