Clichés are clichés because they are generally true, and Tim Tzsyu is preparing to prove that a happy fighter is indeed a dangerous one when he faces Errol Spence on July 26.
After a one-sided loss to WBC junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora in July, the Australian left his uncle and longtime trainer Igor Goloubev.
It was Tszyu’s third consecutive world title defeat.
Desperate for a different voice and approach, Tszyu joined the renowned Pedro Diaz in Miami.
The partnership yielded a pair of drama free, one-sided decision victories but Tszyu still felt something was missing.
Earlier this year, the 31-year-old returned home and began working with Australian great Jeff Fenech.
The new “Aussie super team” has a high-profile first assignment. Tszyu (27-3, 18 KOs) will take on America’s former unified welterweight champion in Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) at Afterpay Arena in Sydney, Australia.
Tszyu is already feeling the benefits of linking up with Fenech outside of the ring.
“I was struggling a lot. People don't see it but I had problems everywhere and I needed to just distance myself from it and focus on what I've got to do now,” the former WBO junior middleweight champion told Sporting News Australia.
“I've met great people. Jeff's come on board and he's made me think differently. We all go out to dinners together. We all laugh together. We're all in it together and the main thing is that post my career when I finish boxing, we're all still going to be together.”
“That's the main thing. When my dad [former junior welterweight world champion, Kostya Tszyu] finished his career, no one was to be seen. No one.
“I remember that from a young age we had a big house back in the days. There used to be 10, 20, 30 people there every weekend. When he finished his career, there was no one. It was me, my mum, my brother and my sister and at least now, what I have now within my team, is that we're all sticking together forever.”
Spence hasn’t boxed since multi-weight world champion Terence Crawford took him apart inside nine rounds of their undisputed welterweight title fight in 2023. Tszyu is determined to make the 36-year-old regret his decision to get back in the ring.
“I reckon I stop this guy. Earlier than Crawford. That’s what I'm going for,” he said.
“He’s taking away what I want. My goal, my belief and my dream.”
