Turki Alalshikh wasted no time making an offer to Brandon Figueroa for his first defense of the WBA featherweight title.
After witnessing Figueroa (27-2-1, 20 KOs) stop Nick Ball (23-1-1, 13 KOs) in the final round Saturday night to become a two-time 126-pound champ, the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority and owner of The Ring wants the newly crowned belt-holder to defend his strap September 12 in Riyadh.
Figueroa was ahead on two scorecards when he dropped Ball twice early in the 12th round, much to the disappointment of a capacity crowd at M&S Bank Arena in Ball’s hometown of Liverpool, England.
“A huge congratulations to Brandon Figueroa for showing his character by taking the risk and traveling to the champion’s backyard to capture the WBA featherweight championship with a great knockout in the final round,” Alalshikh wrote on X. “We want to see you defend your title for the first time on September 12 in Riyadh, when we stage Mexico vs. The World – featuring the return of Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in the main event.”
Figueroa, who was born in Weslaco, Texas, to Mexican parents, entered his matchup with Ball as a sizable underdog.
In the early going, things were competitive. However, his relentless pressure eventually got to Ball, who was a 4-1 favorite according to DraftKings.
At the time of stoppage, Figueroa was leading on two of the three scorecards. Judges Marcus McDonnell and Glenn Fledman had it 106-103 in favor of Figueroa, while judge Jean-Robert Laine had it 107-102 for Ball.
As for Alalshikh’s grand plan, he is slowly putting together his September card.
As he alluded to, Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs), born in Guadalajara, Mexico, will be the headliner in his first fight back since losing his Ring, IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles to Terence Crawford on September 13 in Las Vegas. It will also be Alvarez’s first fight back since having arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow.
An opponent for the future first-ballot Hall-of-Famer has not been named.
