As far as the former two-time Ring heavyweight champion is concerned, though, it arrived early for Oleksandr Usyk, his lone career conqueror.
England’s Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) has now fallen short to the unbeaten Ukrainian in their pair of Ring/unified heavyweight championship encounters in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Seven months after he suffered his first career defeat via split decision, Fury landed on the wrong end of unanimous 116-112 cards for Usyk in Saturday’s rematch at Kingdom Arena.
“In my opinion, a Christmas gift to him,” Fury told reporters during the post-fight press conference. “Not Oleksandr’s fault, congratulations to him and his team.”
Fury felt he made the necessary adjustments from their May 18 thriller, where his team felt he didn’t make full use of his massive size advantage. Among the changes made in their second act was the 6’9” Fury coming in much heavier—officially 281 (though fully clothed) compared to his weight of 262 pounds for their first fight.
While Fury fought on the front foot and was more assertive at times, Usyk relied on his supreme skills and his Christian faith. Usyk has often pointed to his religious beliefs as the foundation for his success.
“Didn’t feel no spirit,” Fury said of Usyk. “I felt a lot of bit of Christmas spirit and I feel like he got a lot of Christmas gifts from those judges. Christmas gift early.”
Fury entered their first fight as the unbeaten WBC and lineal heavyweight champion. He entered Saturday imperfect in record but perfect in rematches—five knockouts in as many wins under that scenario.
Saturday night marked the first time since Feb. 2020—his rematch with Deontay Wilder—where Fury entered the ring as the challenger. 2025 will now mark his first year since 2020 where he will begin without an official title in his possession.
