It wasn’t as dramatic or thrilling as the first installment, but Oleksandr Usyk decisively got the job done once again against Tyson Fury, beating the Brit by unanimous decision on December 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
It wasn’t as dramatic or thrilling as the first installment, but Oleksandr Usyk decisively got the job done once again against Tyson Fury, beating the Brit by unanimous decision on December 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The Ring Magazine, WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBO champion Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) outlanded Fury 179 to 144, and again controlled the second half of the fight, landing more jabs, power punches, and body shots as the accurate and efficient fighter. The three judges each scored the contest 116-112 in favor of Usyk.
A frustrated Fury skipped on giving his post-fight remarks in the ring and was searching for answers as he returned to the dressing room.
"I swear to God, I thought I won it by at least three rounds," Fury said as he crossed paths with former coach Ben Davison in the corridors of the Kingdom Arena. "I bossed the fight [on my] front foot."
The former heavyweight champion Fury (34-2-1, 23 KOs) elaborated on the rematch during the post-fight press conference, labeling Usyk’s win as an early Christmas gift to the Ukrainian.
"I was quite confident [I was ahead going into the 12th round]," Fury said. "I thought I won that fight again. I thought I won both fights. But then again, I've gone home with two losses on my record now.
"There's not much I can do about it, I can just fight my heart out and do the best I can. I'll always believe until the day I die I won that fight. I was on the front foot all night landing to the body and head.
"I feel a lot of people did [have me winning] as well, same score. [Queensberry Promotions head] Frank [Warren] had me [winning by] three or four rounds. A lot of people had me [up] at least two [rounds]. It is what it is, I'm not going to cry over spilled milk.
"I know boxing. You can't change [any] decisions but I'll just always feel a little bit hard done by [the Usyk fights]. Not a little bit – actually a lot. When you don't get the knockout, this is what happens. You can't guarantee a win."
The always jolly Fury, who made his ring walk in a Santa Claus-inspired suit to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” also claimed Usyk was handed a present by way of the win.
“In my opinion, a Christmas gift to him,” said Fury. “Not Oleksandr’s fault, congratulations to him and his team ... I felt a lot of bit of Christmas spirit and I feel like he got a lot of Christmas gifts from those judges. Christmas gift early.”
