Peter Fury denied Anthony Joshua’s claims that the pair will be in contact ahead of the December 11 superfight against his nephew Tyson.
Joshua and Fury, the two-time world heavyweight champions, will clash at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in what will be the richest fight in British history.
At Wednesday’s press conference in London to announce this latest Ring event, “AJ” revealed he has been in regular contact with Fury’s former coach and uncle, Peter, over the past few months and that he was “willing to help” him prepare for the fight.
Alongside Fury’s former coach, Ben Davison, who will train Joshua for the fight, the Londoner appeared to have built a team with as much inside knowledge of his opponent as possible. “With these two powerhouses coming together,” he said of Davison and Fury. “I think it will be a match made in heaven.”
After keeping a low profile following Joshua’s revelation, Fury broke his silence on the situation and insisted he isn't planning to help his nephew’s rival after all.
“I believe in helping all athletes to better themselves,” he wrote on Twitter. “We are in a sport, not a war.
“Your fighter wins, great; he loses, then take it on the chin—too many politics in the sport.
“Me and AJ spoke two months ago about advice on his skill set; really nice guy.
“After his fight, anything he needs from me [would] be a pleasure. He has a great team around him, including Team Usyk.”
Fury, who steered his nephew to his unforgettable world title-winning victory over Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015, still trains a number of fighters.
One of his long-term projects has been kickboxing icon Rico Verhoeven (1-1, 1 KO), who most recently lost in his challenge for Oleksandr Usyk’s WBC heavyweight title.
Fury added: “My focus now is Rico. We start camp very soon.”
