IBF junior bantamweight champion Andrew Moloney was an interested party when Ricardo Malajika pipped Tomoya Tsuboi to win the WBC 115-pound title on September 27.
Moloney was working the Japanese show remotely as a commentator for Australian TV channel FOX Sports.
While interested to see how they matched up given Tsuboi's transition from amateur star to pro contender against an in-form Malajika, The Ring's No. 5 junior bantamweight saw the fight differently than two judges.
Malajika won 116-112 and 115-113 on two scorecards to earn a surprise split decision, outweighing the one 115-113 card in Tsuboi's favor.
"I actually thought that Tsuboi deserved the victory, felt he outworked and outlanded Malajika," Moloney (29-4, 18 KOs) told The Ring.
"I certainly believe that Tsuboi was controlling the fight. I'll have to watch it again, but think I would have had Tsuboi winning eight rounds to four."
After Ring and unified champion Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez departed the division for bantamweight earlier this year, the Australian hopes he can help restore clarity at 115 pounds.
"Now that Malajika has that WBC world title, I'll be doing everything I can to get a unification fight with him," he said.
"That is absolutely the fight I want, got hold of the IBF so now want to start collecting the other belts at junior bantamweight. That beautiful green and gold belt will look amazing in my trophy cabinet."
As it stands, the 35-year-old is awaiting news on a fight date. Having outworked Willibaldo Garcia to claim IBF honors on June 6, he's hopeful his status changes and he can finish the year strong with a title defense.
"I'm training hard at the moment, actually had a December fight lined up which has fallen through, so really hoping I can get a title defense in before the end of the year."
