What never should’ve been sanctioned as a 105-pound title fight is now not one.
Neider Valdez came in 6.2 pounds over the strawweight limit Friday for his fight against Oscar Collazo on Saturday night in Oceanside, California. Valdez replaced Filipino contender Joey Canoy as Collazo’s opponent Wednesday because visa issues prevented Canoy from entering the United States.
Puerto Rico’s Collazo (14-0, 11 KOs), ranked No. 9 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list, owns The Ring, WBA and WBO 105-pound crowns. The WBA declined to sanction Collazo-Valdez as a title bout due to Valdez’s struggles over the past year, but the WBO overlooked his lack of qualifications and approved it as a championship match.
Canoy (25-5-2, 15 KOs, 1 NC) is ranked No. 5 by The Ring and the WBO and No. 9 by the WBA.
Mexico’s Valdez (15-3-3, 12 KOs) fought for the then-vacant WBA light flyweight title in December 2024, but he lost a unanimous decision to Erick Rosa (then 7-0). Since suffering that defeat, Valdez lost by second-round knockout to Victor Rojas (then 8-3-3) in May 2025 and recently settled for a six-round majority draw with Gerardo Rodriguez, who entered their bout with a 4-4 record on May 30 in Guadalupe, Mexico.
Valdez, 25, hasn’t competed in the strawweight division since March 2024, when Mexico’s Erik Badillo (19-0, 8 KOs) stopped him in the fifth round.
Collazo is listed as an astounding 80-1 favorite by DraftKings in a 12-round main event DAZN will stream from Frontwave Arena. The 29-year-old southpaw officially weighed 110.6 pounds for his fight versus Valdez, who stepped on the California State Athletic Commission’s scale at 111.2 pounds.
DAZN’s coverage of the Collazo-Valdez undercard is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT).
