Vito Mielnicki Jr. has outgrown the junior middleweight division.
The 22-year-old Mielnicki therefore determined after his most recent fight that he should compete at the middleweight limit of 160 pounds in 2025. The Ring has confirmed Mielnicki will make his middleweight debut February 14, when he will encounter Northern Ireland’s Connor Coyle in a 10-round fight ESPN will televise as the opener of a three-bout broadcast from Madison Square Garden’s Theater.
Coyle is undefeated, but the 34-year-old Irishman has accepted what figures to be his most difficult fight in eight years as a pro. The Pinellas Park, Florida resident defeated England’s Kyle Lomotey (12-3, 2 KOs) in his most recent action, an eight-round fight August 3 at Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley, England.
Despite the lack of accomplished opponents on his record, Coyle (21-0, 9 KOs) is the WBA’s third-ranked contender in the middleweight division. The 6-foot-1 Mielnicki (20-1, 12 KOs) is ranked fifth among the WBA’s super welterweight contenders.
Mielnicki’s handlers hoped to eventually oppose Puerto Rican contender Xander Zayas when the Roseland, New Jersey native signed with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc. early in June. If that fight is to happen, however, it will now need to be contested within the middleweight division.
Zayas (20-0, 12 KOs), of Sunrise, Florida, is scheduled to square off against Germany’s Slawa Spomer (20-0, 11 KOs) in ESPN’s 10-round co-feature that will immediately follow the Mielnicki-Coyle contest February 14.
Ukraine’s Denys Berinchyk (19-0, 9 KOs) is set to defend his WBO lightweight title against number one contender Keyshawn Davis (12-0, 8 KOs, 1 NC) in the 12-round main event. Davis, 25, is The Ring’s fifth-ranked fighter in the 135-pound division, one spot atop Berinchyk, who will defend his WBO belt for the first time since he upset three-weight world champion Emanuel Navarrete (39-2-1, 32 KOs) by split decision May 18 at Pechanga Arena in San Diego.
Mielnicki, meanwhile, will try to atone for a subpar performance in his last fight, a 10-round, majority-decision victory over light-punching Italian Khalil El Harraz (16-6-1, 8 KOs) on September 27 at The Theater. Top Rank’s matchmakers expected Mielnicki to win that bout by knockout based on how he had improved since top trainer Ronnie Shields began working with him in 2023.
That win, however unimpressive, extended Mielnicki’s winning streak to 12 since he surprisingly lost an eight-round majority decision to Philadelphia’s James Martin (then 6-2) in April 2021 at Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles.
Mielnicki was 18 when Martin upset him. He tried to avenge what is still his only professional loss in his next bout, but Martin was almost five pounds overweight for their immediate rematch.
Martin’s unprofessionalism prompted Mielnicki to face late replacement Noah Kidd (then 6-3-2). Mielnicki won that bout by second-round technical knockout in July 2021 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
