Gavin Gwynne will get the chance to even the score with Cameron Vuong but both fighters will take an interim fight before renewing hostilities at some point in 2025.
Vuong (7-0, 3 KOs) has been on an accelerated apprenticeship and, in November, he took a massive step up in quality to face the former British, Commonwealth and European lightweight champion in just his seventh professional fight.
Although the fight was seen as a major gamble prior, there were obvious reasons as to why Vuong’s team fancied their man’s chances. Gwynne (17-4-1, 5 KOs), is a fit, relentless fighter but has struggled in the past with speed and movement. The 34 year-old was also coming into the contest after a couple of unconvincing displays.
In December 2023, Italian veteran Emiliano Marsili gave him trouble over the first half of their vacant European title fight before the sharp shooting Mark Chamberlain damaged his eye socket and scored a fourth-round stoppage in their March matchup on Saudi shores.
On the night, however, Gwynne rolled back the years and produced his best performance for some time. He refused to leave Vuong alone and although the 22 year-old scored with some accurate flurries and displayed some flashes of genuine quality, Gwynne imposed himself more as the rounds passed and turned it into his kind of fight.
Vuong deserved credit for refusing to buckle and staying in the fight right until the very end but when the final bell rang, the overwhelming feeling at ringside and from those watching on television was clear: the experienced Welshman had done more than enough to win. The three scoring judges thought differently, awarding Vuong a unanimous decision (97-94, 96-94, 96-95) after ten rounds.
Too many unnecessary rematches have clogged up boxing in recent years but this was a fight worthy of a return.
Gwynne deserved the chance to right a widely perceived wrong whilst Vuong will have learned lots from the entire experience. A rematch provides him the opportunity to put lessons into practice with a clearer, more conclusive victory.
The various parties have clearly been in discussions and have agreed to a deal. On Tuesday morning, Gwynne took to Facebook and posted the following;
“Job done, the rematch is going to happen between me and @_cameronvuong both going to have fights beforehand and gotta get the job done but next time we fight will have title on line makes it even better @mr_samjones @leeeaton”
