Kenia Enriquez is looking for a fight while her boxing career remains in limbo.
Rather than wait for a title defense, the WBC interim flyweight champion plans to add MMA gold to her list of accolades. Nicknamed “The Mexican Queen,” Enriquez (28-1, 11 KOs) has signed a multi-fight promotional deal with MMA organization Combate Global, it was announced Tuesday.
Much like Claressa Shields, Amanda Serrano and Savannah Marshall have done in recent years, Enriquez (1-0 in MMA) is throwing her hands in MMA. She is scheduled to face Hannah Brobyskov (0-1) on July 17 during a Combate event in Miami.
Enriquez seeks activity as she anxiously awaits her opportunity to face undisputed flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora, The Ring’s 2024 “Fighter of the Year.
The 31-year-old Enriquez, from Tijuana, Mexico, hasn’t fought in boxing since February 2024, when she defended the WBC interim title against Maria Salinas. Enriquez originally won her interim belt by beating Ibeth Zamora Silva in September 2023. Enriquez also held the WBO’s secondary flyweight title in 2014 and the WBC interim junior flyweight title from 2018 to 2020.
“We welcome Kenia Enriquez, an incredible athlete, to Combate, and condemn the disrespect the WBC has shown her,” said Combate Global CEO Campbell McLaren. “We will elevate her Combate career the same way we plucked Amanda Serrano from boxing obscurity, raising her profile significantly to get Jake Paul’s attention.”
Serrano was 36 fights into her boxing career and already a multiple-weight world champion when she made her MMA debut in 2018 under the Combate banner.
As women’s boxing continues to blossom, stars like Serrano (2-0-1), Shields (2-1) and Marshall (1-0) have been non-committal to continuing their MMA careers. Enriquez made her MMA debut on March 13 by beating Hayley Valentine via unanimous decision during a Combate event.
