Ben Whittaker’s Easter Sunday rematch with Liam Cameron will still go ahead despite an ongoing argument about the fight’s length.
That is the opinion of Cameron’s promoter Frank Warren, who insists some ‘accommodation will have to be reached’ after the unusual contract debacle.
The two light heavyweights have agreed to meet again following the controversial technical draw in Riyadh on October 12, which ended when both men tumbled over the top rope.
They are now scheduled to fight on Sunday, April 20 in the main event of Boxxer’s show at the BP Pulse Arena in Birmingham, only a few miles from Whittaker’s home town of West Bromwich.
However, a dispute over how long the fight will be has emerged after Cameron revealed in a radio interview that he signed for a 12-rounder but has since been asked to change it to 10.
The Sheffield man, who is a significant underdog in the clash, insists he is “not budging” on the terms he has already signed which seemed to throw the entire fight into doubt.
But Hall of Fame promoter Warren believes the pair will still fight, although there should be some remuneration for the mix-up.
“That’s not our fault or anything to do with us,” said Warren during an exclusive interview with The Ring. “Lee Eaton is Liam's manager and Queensberry is his promoter and there were negotiations on his behalf.
“The contract was drafted for 12 rounds and signed by all parties. What is there to dispute from where we stand?
“Unfortunately they negotiated a 10-round fight and signed for a 10-round fight with Ben. That’s where they are.
“I’ve never been involved in anything like this before… rounds are not messed up for us and they’re not messed up for Ben. They all signed contracts for what was negotiated and that’s it.
“Neither fighter is to blame. Nobody put an arm up the promoters’ backs to sign it. The promoters signed it, not just the fighters.
“I think the fight will happen, there just has to be some accommodation that will have to be reached.”
The Ring have reached out to Boxxer for comment on multiple occasions but are yet to receive any reply.
