Wiliam Scull fought a careful fight this past weekend vs. Canelo Alvarez. Some would even say too careful. Actually, most would probably say that.
The 32-year-old spent his entire life fighting for an opportunity. Saturday night, he got exactly what he was looking for but failed to cash in.
Scull (23-1, 9 KOs) bounced around, moved, feinted, moved around some more and, of course, moved even more. At no point did the Cuban plant his feet and fire with any conviction. Once the final bell rang, Alvarez and most of the boxing world were fully convinced that Scull’s offense led to his downfall.
However, he doesn’t see a problem with the way he fought. In actuality, Scull believes that he was a bit more active and clever than his man, which should have led to a victory.
“Yes yes,” said Scull to Fight Hub TV when asked if he should have gotten the nod. “After the fifth round, I felt like I was in control of the fight and I was ahead.”
Scull’s movement not only aggravated fans across the globe but it also infuriated Alvarez. Although he did his best to hunt him down, Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) raised his hands in frustration numerous times. Scull, though, never took the bait. He remained on the outside, pranced around the ring and landed an occasional jab whenever he could.
In the eyes of many, there was too much on the line for Scull to be passive. Every major super middleweight title was up for grabs and the chance to become a household name was there for the taking. Still, the way Scull sees it, he had Alvarez beat and found it unnecessary to push the action.
“We were executing our plan," said Scull. "There was no need to take any chances, any risks.”
