The last time William Scull fought, he lost his IBF super middleweight title to then-Ring and unified world champion Canelo Alvarez in a rather tepid bout May 3.
The 33-year-old, rated No. 10 among The Ring's 168-pound contenders, is ready to put that display behind him and rise again vs. Jacob Bank in Kolding, Denmark, at Sydbank Arena on Saturday.
"A great opportunity to prove my talent once again," Scull (23-1, 9 KOs) told The Ring.
"I know he's undefeated and hungry, and the fight is in his hometown. I'm a boxer who has always fought away from home, and I like these challenges."
The manner of his defeat to Alvarez left many with a negative impression, though the Cuban believes it has helped him evolve as a fighter.
"It was a great experience for me, [I'm] a little disappointed by the loss, but I took it as constructive criticism that has helped my development as a boxer," he said. "Many people criticize me, but no one criticizes Canelo, who didn't find me in the ring. Having great footwork is not the same as just running, as those who don't know about boxing say."
The decade-long pro has since moved on from longtime trainer Frankie Aldama to work with Ernesto Aroche, former coach of the Cuban youth national team.
Scull's training camp has taken place in Spain, Madrid and Mallorca, as he seeks to capitalize on an ever-changing divisional landscape.
Despite Alvarez losing a September superfight against Terence Crawford, who retired last month, Scull doesn't believe the weight class has been weakened much. He feels he can climb to the top once more.
"The super middleweight division has always been strong," he said. "I'm a boxer who's ready to fight, I'm registered with all four sanctioning bodies, I'm focused on this fight, and after the victory better things will come."
Ingo Volckmann of AGON Sports believes this fight will propel Scull right back into the mix at 168.
"It's another great opportunity after his strong performance against Canelo," said the promoter. "Of course, he should have pushed harder towards the end to win.
"He's already been a world champion. Now he has the chance to prove he can become champion again. If he beats Bank, he'll be right back in contention for a world title, make another run at it and become world champion again. Tthat's our goal."
Bank (17-0, 9 KOs) turned professional in September 2020. He worked his way up in Denmark and claimed various WBO regional titles along the way.
The 24-year-old has caught the eye with wins over the previously unbeaten trio Ralfs Vilcans (UD 10), Ibo Maier (RTD 4) and Damian Biacho (UD 10) as well as a fifth-round stoppage win over veteran Tyron Zeuge on September 13.
