Not even the benefit of a one-month delay can help out Yoshiki Takei.
A shoulder injury has forced The Ring No. 4 bantamweight out of a planned Jan. 24 WBO bantamweight title defense against Thailand’s Yuttapong Tongdee. The bout was due to appear on the undercard of the rescheduled Naoya Inoue-Sam Goodman RING and undisputed junior featherweight championship at Ariake Arena in Tokyo.
Yokohama’s Takei (10-0, 8 KOs) suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder, ironically at a time when he likely would have rested ahead of the originally scheduled Dec. 24 fight date.
The event was already postponed by a month when Australia’s Goodman (19-0. 8 KOs), The Ring. No. 3 junior featherweight, suffered a cut during his last day of sparring.
“This championship defense was to be on January 24th, but due to a torn labrum in my right shoulder, I [can no longer] participate,” Takei confirmed on Thursday. “I am truly sorry to my opponent, Yuttapong, everyone involved… and to my supporters and fans who were looking forward to this match.”
Takei would have attempted the second defense of the WBO 118-pound title. Tongdee (15-0, 9 KOs) was due to enter his first major title fight.
Hideyuki Ohashi, Takei’s promoter, told Sankei Sports that the bout will be rescheduled for next spring.
It was not determined whether it would remain in Japan or on a U.S. show headlined by Inoue (28-0, 25 KOs). As previously reported, The Ring 122-pound champion and No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter plans to fight in Las Vegas with a win over Goodman.
Takei has shared six cards with Inoue, including his last five bouts.
The 28-year-old southpaw has greatly benefited from their working relationship, including his first major title claim earlier this year. Takei dethroned Australia’s Jason Moloney on the May 4 undercard of Inoue’s off-the-canvas, sixth-round knockout of Tijuana’s Luis Nery (35-2, 27 KOs) at the Tokyo Dome.
One defense has followed, a narrow points win over countryman and former flyweight titlist Daigo Higa (21-3-1, 19 KOs) on Sept. 24 at Ariake Arena. Inoue earned a seventh-round, technical knockout of Ireland’s TJ Doheny (26-5, 20 KOs) in the main event.
This upcoming show will now move on without Takei.
“I would like to focus on treating my injury and try to get back to work as soon as possible,” said Takei. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused to many people.”
