Xander Zayas wholeheartedly believed he would beat Jaron Ennis.
But after seeing the canvas three times and getting stopped in seven brutal rounds Saturday night at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, the 23-year-old has to live with the sting of a defeat that cost him his perfect record and WBA and WBO junior middleweight titles.
Still, the proud Puerto Rican knows that his native island will continue to have his back. And he promises to bounce back.
“Thank you Puerto Rico for dreaming with me and for accompanying me at all times,” Zayas wrote on his Instagram account. “This is part of the journey, and I promise you a better version of me in the future.”
Zayas had his moments – particularly in a dramatic third round, when he appeared to rock Ennis (36-0, 32 KOs, 1 NC) – but the success was fleeting, as the winner simply landed too many damaging blows.
Zayas (23-1, 13 KOs) was warned by many that he was too inexperienced to face someone as talented and seasoned as Ennis. However, he has no regrets.
“Always dream big," he said, "There is nothing wrong with failing, but in not trying. Love you guys so much, and we will be back soon.”
