Xander Zayas is promising to beat Jaron “Boots” Ennis in such a fashion that pound-for-pound list consideration will be warranted soon after.
Zayas (23-0, 13 KOs), the WBA and WBO 154-pound champion, defends his titles against Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs) on June 27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, as part of a DAZN Pay-Per-View/DAZN Ultimate main event.
“Jaron Ennis is supposedly the best name at 154 pounds, so once I beat him, I should enter the pound-for-pound list,” Zayas told The Ring.
“It's something that I don't have control of. It's up to the writers and everyone else who votes. I'm not focused on the pound-for-pound list. I am focused on beating Jaron Ennis.”
Zayas is ranked No. 3 by The Ring at 154 pounds, and Ennis is rated No. 5.
If Zayas were to beat Ennis in a way that would warrant pound-for-pound consideration, he’d have to jockey for position within the second half of The Ring’s top 10 list, which includes fighters like Dmitry Bivol (No. 6), Junto Nakatani (No. 7), Devin Haney (No. 8), Oscar Collazo (No. 9), and Emanuel Navarrete (No. 10).
“I am Xander Zayas, and I write history, and I am going to do it one more time on June 27,” Zayas said. “I'm growing in the sport. I know what I am capable of and I am pushing myself every time to the limit knowing that I am the best. It's simple to push myself harder and harder every day to get the work done.”
Zayas has gotten into a groove over the last year during a pair of title-winning performances and decision wins, beating Jorge Garcia Perez in July for the vacant WBO title and Abass Baraou in January for the WBA title.
“I'm ready to shock the world and prove myself right one more time,” Zayas said. “That's what it comes down to. I'm going to come victorious, whether by knockout or by decision. I'm going to make the necessary adjustments to come out victorious.”
