Derek Chisora isn’t following conventional wisdom when it comes to Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury.
According to most, including DraftKings, Fury has the edge ahead of their Ring main event December 11 at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, streamed live on Netflix. Despite Joshua heading into their bout as an underdog, not only does Chisora believe Joshua will win, he is confident that Fury’s rival will get it done without the help of the three judges sitting ringside.
“AJ will beat Tyson Fury,” Chisora told Seconds Out in an interview on its YouTube channel. “He’s got the power. One thing about AJ, whether it’s round 6, round 8, round 12, you’re going to get knocked out. [Fury is] past it.”
Joshua’s power bailed him out of serious trouble in his last appearance July 25 at Jeddah Superdome in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The two-time former heavyweight champion was knocked down twice in round one against Kristian Prenga, a middling heavyweight who never previously competed at the championship level. Despite getting dropped twice and almost stopped, Joshua (30-4, 26 KOs) managed to compose himself before flatlining Prenga in the second round.
Even though London’s Chisora chose the 2012 Olympic gold medalist to get the job done, he is convinced that Fury has checked more boxes in terms of career accomplishments.
“The best British heavyweight of this era has to go to Tyson,” Chisora continued. “It goes to Tyson because Tyson did things that were unbelievable. He went to Germany, dethroned the guy (Wladimir Klitschko in 2015). Messed around for about a year, drinking, alcohol, then he came back and beat Deontay Wilder twice (in 2020 and 2021). He’s gone in people’s back garden and taken the titles and brought them home. AJ has never done that. I think Tyson should be number one.”
Fury (36-2-1, 25 KOs) went 3-0 against Chisora (36-14, 23 KOs), including two technical-knockout victories. Chisora never fought Joshua.
As Chisora mentioned, Fury upset Ukraine’s Klitschko by unanimous decision in November 2015 to win The Ring, IBF, WBA and WBO titles. Fury refused to grant Klitschko the immediate rematch he was contractually owed, however, vacated his titles and retired for the second time in October 2016.
During that retirement, UK Anti-Doping suspended Fury for two years because he tested positive for elevated nandrolone metabolites in February 2015. His suspension was applied retroactively when the UKAD case was resolved in December 2017.
Fury, who is The Ring’s No. 3 contender for Usyk’s championship, also openly admitted to using cocaine and alcohol as he battled mental health and weight issues during that turbulent time.
He eventually returned to the ring in June 2018 and went on to fight then-reigning WBC champion Deontay Wilder. Fury and Wilder fought to a controversial split draw in December 2018, but “The Gypsy King” stopped Wilder in back-to-back fights in February 2020 and October 2021.
The 38-year-old Fury, who retired for the fifth time after suffering consecutive points losses to Oleksandr Usyk in 2024, is on a two-fight winning streak. His latest win came against Mariusz Wach on July 24, when he stopped the faded Polish veteran in the seventh round in Pattaya, Thailand.
