Christian Mbilli promises to deliver a big show against an even tougher test, a year after engaging in a pulsating 10-round firefight with Lester Martinez in Las Vegas.
That was on the Canelo-Crawford undercard and now he fancies becoming only the fourth man to topple a legendary four-division champion hunting more history with the chips stacked against him.
Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) naturally took time to lick his wounds after being soundly outboxed by Terence Crawford, who has since retired from the sport, while Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) was upgraded to full champion as the 168-pound division continues to shake out following the Omaha native's swift yet cathartic departure.
Many feel the Mexican icon, 36 next month, is biting off more than he can chew in returning from a year-long layoff against an aggressive, power-punching younger man eager to deliver a statement of intent across the division.
The Cameroon-born Frenchman, who now calls Canada home, is among those who was surprised to have received the call. In conversation with The Ring's Rick Reeno, the 31-year-old waxes lyrical about why this opportunity means so much to him, why now is his time to shine and shares insights into a not-so-subtle gameplan for Canelo.
Here, they discuss several topics including:
- Was he expecting the call from Canelo for his first title defense?
- Assessing the possibilities after Crawford's win over Canelo
- Danger in fighting a declining legend
- Applying pressure, combinations, sharpening his defensive skills
- Delivering a 'big show' for boxing fans
- Being inspired by Mike Tyson's vicious boxing intentions as a youngster
- Face of the 168-pound division ... will September 12 be his coming out party?
- How active does he want to be going forward and why?
Their full sit-down interview is now available to watch and stream across all platforms. Enjoy the episode! 🥊💥
