Adames wants 'personal' fight with Alimkhanuly as soon as possible

There was little dispute that Carlos Adames and Janibek Alimkhanuly were the world's two best middleweights in 2025.
A potential bout would have been one of boxing's best fights.
Any hopes of that coming to fruition hit a significant snag when Alimkhanuly delivered an adverse analytical finding for the performance-enhancing drug Meldonium following a Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) test, canceling his unification bout with WBA champion Erislandy Lara scheduled for December 6.
Still, even with Alimkhanuly’s future uncertain, Adames hopes to face the Kazakh southpaw and views a potential clash as more than just a fight.
“The situation between Janibek and me is personal,” Adames said during the newest episode of “Inside The Ring,” which premiered Monday on DAZN. “It’s something that I wish to the heavens, to the most high, that fight is made. I believe that fight should be made as soon as possible. I’m ready to take that fight against him whenever. I would love for that fight to happen soon for the enjoyment of boxing fans everywhere.”
The 33-year-old Alimkhanuly (17-0, 12 KOs) was stripped of his IBF title and suspended for one year by the WBO. The WBO suspension can’t prevent Alimkhanuly from fighting for a year, but he presumably wouldn’t be able to defend his WBO belt if he boxed before his suspension ends.
The 31-year-old Adames (25-1-1, 18 KOs) returned to the ring after a nearly 13-month layoff on March 21 and won a one-sided unanimous decision against Austin “Ammo” Williams (20-2, 13 KOs) to retain his WBC belt.
The Elias Pina, Dominican Republic native dropped Williams in the second round with a straight right hand and appeared close to stopping him on multiple occasions in the fight's second half, coasting to his third title defense.
- Adames, The Ring’s No. 1-ranked middleweight, has stated he’s willing to fight anyone between 154 and 168 pounds, including Lester Martinez, newly-minted IBF super middleweight champion Osleys Iglesias and a potential rematch against Hamzah Sheeraz after their controversial split draw in February 2025.
Most believe Adames did more than enough to win that bout by decision. However, a potential fight against Alimkhanuly clearly carries the most weight for Adames, given the war of words and what has been said.
“It’s something really personal because he has said he’s going to hurt me outside of the ring, and I would like for him to prove that he can do everything he says inside the ring,” Adames said. “Not only to just talk it in front of a camera or speak into a microphone and talk about all the things he will do to me.
“I would love for him to show me how he’s going to accomplish that, when he knows I am a better fighter than him. I am stronger than him and a better boxer than he is. I would love for him to show me all of those things inside the ring, and that’s why this fight is completely personal.”
