Osleys Iglesias would choose Canelo Alvarez as a future opponent over Christian Mbilli because challenging the Mexican icon clearly would earn the Cuban knockout artist more money.
Iglesias realizes, though, that he might not get the opportunity to pick who would train him for a title unification fight against Mbilli if his stablemate beats Alvarez on October 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Marc Ramsey, one of the top trainers in Canadian boxing history, has long worked with Mbilli and began training Iglesias less than three months ago.
Ramsey will be Iglesias’ chief second for the first time Thursday night, when “The Tornado” defends his IBF super middleweight title for the first time against Danish southpaw Oliver Zaren in Quebec City, Canada. DAZN will stream the 12-round, 168-pound championship clash between Igelsias (15-0, 14 KOs) and Zaren (19-0-1, 8 KOs) as the main event of an Eye of the Tiger Management card from Capitole de Quebec (6:30 p.m. ET).
Iglesias is a 20-1 favorite to defeat Zaren, according to DraftKings. He wouldn’t be surprised, either, if Mbilli upsets Alvarez three weeks later in their 12-round fight for the Cameroonian champion’s WBC super middleweight title (DAZN Pay-Per-View; DAZN Ultimate).
Should Mbilli beat Alvarez and Eye of the Tiger is willing to match its super middleweight champions against one another, Iglesias could find himself looking for a new trainer for the second time in as many bouts.
“That’s a good question, but that’s a question you have to ask Marc, to see who he’s gonna choose,” Iglesias told The Ring. “But me, I don’t come up with excuses. Whoever’s in my corner is in my corner, but there are no excuses with me.”
Ramsey replaced Georg Bramowski as Iglesias’ trainer because Iglesias and Bramowski “didn’t agree on some things.” Bramowski trained Iglesias from the time he moved from Cuba to Germany in 2019, but the 28-year-old southpaw appreciates how Ramsey has helped him in the same Montreal gym where Mbilli has prepared for his showdown with Alvarez.
“It’s been going really good,” Iglesias said. “We have great chemistry. They made me feel like family. They see how strong I am, how much I work, that my work ethic is great. So, it’s a great thing for me to be [working with Ramsey].”
Iglesias and Mbilli don’t train at the same time, nor would he allow the trainer they share to prevent him from trying to unify super middleweight titles by battling Mbilli.
“We’re not friends,” Iglesias said. “I respect everybody. I respect my rivals and I respect everybody in my division. But my only friend is my mom, and if she’s in the ring with me, I’m still gonna try and win that fight.”
Iglesias, The Ring’s No. 2 contender for a vacant 168-pound crown, has had difficulty luring top super middleweights into a fight with him. Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) is the only boxer ranked ahead of him by The Ring, whereas Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) is rated third.
“It’s a great opportunity for Mbilli to win and keep the title, and to make a great purse,” Iglesias said. “It’s a good opportunity for Canelo to make a comeback. It’s a great fight. It’s a 50-50 fight.”
