It has been 41 months since Tyson Fury last boxed on British soil and 16 since he laced them up at all.
Insistent upon never boxing again following his retirement in the wake of his second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024, Fury, of course, is back. And, after a 16-week training camp in Thailand, the self-styled Gypsy King is adamant that at 37 he is as good as ever as he looks to add one final chapter to his glittering career. Fights with Anthony Joshua and a potential chance to become three-time world heavyweight champion in a trilogy clash with Usyk are on the horizon, but all of those plans can be wrecked Saturday night by one of Dagestan’s favorite sons Arslabek Makhmudov (21-2, 19 KOs). The 6-foot-6 "Lion" is back in Britain after a points win over Dave Allen in Sheffield six months ago, but this time the 36-year-old has the chance to transform his life completely with a victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Tickets for Fury vs. Makhmudov are available at www.ticketmaster.co.uk 🥊💥
Given he beat MMA star Francis Ngannou over 10 rounds and lost to Usyk twice, Fury has actually not registered a victory over a proper boxer since his last visit to the north London club, when he stopped Derek Chisora in the 10th round of his WBC heavyweight title defense in December 2022. If that feels like a long time ago, it’s because it is. Can Fury roll the back the years and make a statement of intent or will Makhmudov end his latest comeback story before it has even begun?
Fantasy
The picks are in from The Ring’s Mike Coppinger and Max Kellerman. Think you can beat them? Predict winners for prizes.
They said it: Fury: “He’s had something like 19 knockouts in the first three rounds so an early onslaught is on the cards for sure. But that will only get him knocked out because one miss and it’s over. I’ll counter him and knock his brains out with a left hook or a right hand. I’ve done it many times before. It’s not the right gameplan to try and steamroll the Gypsy King. It doesn’t work.” Makhmudov: “This is my dream fight. We have worked on all the tactical stuff in training camp and I am ready now. I’ve enjoyed every moment of it and I’ll enjoy the fight and do everything in my power to win. I know my life will change when I do that. I don’t know Tyson’s plan, but I know plan and that is to beat him in any way possible.”
What are the odds?
Despite his 16-month layoff, Fury is still a clear favorite with all bookmakers, most of which have priced him at 1/4 (-400). If you fancy the upset, Makhmudov is available at 9/2 (+450) while the draw is unsurprisingly out at 28/1 (+2800).
Must-see on the undercard
In his first fight since stunning the boxing world by leaving Matchroom for Zuffa Boxing, Conor Benn takes on Regis Prograis in a 10-round, 150-pound catchweight bout. Benn is No. 1 with the WBC at welterweight but his hopes of fighting for the world title this year will suffer a huge blow if he slips up against 37-year-old former champion in Prograis. The other notable fights on the undercard are both at heavyweight with Jeamie TKV defending his British title against fellow Londonder Richard Riakporhe. Then, five months on from his own defeat to TKV, Frazer Clarke, 34, will bid to revive his career in an intriguing 10-rounder with Justis Huni in his first fight since he was knocked out by Fabio Wardley in June.
Location
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London.
How can I watch it?
This is the first boxing show on British soil broadcast live on Netflix. The show starts at 2 p.m. ET/7 GMT.
