Daniel Dubois vs. Fabio Wardley II: Live results from London's O2 Arena

7 min read
WBO heavyweight world champion Daniel Dubois promises a quicker finish second time around, as he faces Fabio Wardley just five months after their Manchester firefight.
The early headline from yesterday's weigh in? Former champion Wardley (20-1-1, 19 KOs) has weighed a career-heaviest 248.25lbs as the Ipswich puncher looks for a more conclusive finish against Dubois (23-3, 22 KOs).
He scored two knockdowns in the first three rounds but got complacent and overzealous behind his patented right hand, a tactic duly punished with career-altering circumstances.
As such, the sensible pre-fight pick is Dubois by stoppage and earlier than their memorable May 9 meeting but you just never know in heavyweight boxing...
Location: O2 Arena in London, England

DUBOIS vs. WARDLEY - ROUND 2
Wardley is trying to bounce and stay fleet footed, but not able to get much in the way of economical movement. Dubois closing the distance effortlessly without expending much energy or effort, clubbing blows.... the towel comes in and Steve Gray steps in between them! It's all over and destructive Dubois retains his WBO crown!
DUBOIS vs. WARDLEY - ROUND 1
Wardley's co-trainer Ben Davison reportedly has the towel in his hand... but we hear the bell to end a furious first frame. Not sure this is gonna last much longer though.
The punches continue to rain down on Wardley, he does his best to hold and delay Dubois' advances but it's almost delaying the inevitable here... The swarm continues, a heavy uppercut and even more punishment persists. WOW!
Dubois has come out like he's got somewhere better to be and the roles have reversed in some style! He crunches Wardley with a whopping right hand, then more combos after Steve Gray gives the challenger a standing count... you can see IBF titleholder Filip Hrgovic watching on, among others... wonder what he's thinking here.
Queensberry's ring announcer Thomas Treiber confirms Ferenc Budai, Phil Edwards and Ammar Sakroui are the three judges ringside, though they almost certainly won't be needed here. The referee? Steve Gray.
The last men's world championship fight he officiated was Josh Kelly's 12-round upset win over Bakhram Murtazaliev in January.
Dubois is all business as he punches his gloves together, ignores marches to the ring so quickly you miss out on the song transition to a reggae number. The time for celebrations can wait, he's got business to attend to.
Wardley looks focused as tonight's challenger walks out first, manager Michael Ofo passionately rallying the troops behind him as Roy Jones Jr's Can't Be Touched song, some 22 years old, reveberates around the O2 Arena.
MAIN EVENT TIME!
Busier throughout, probably lost two or three rounds at most, though he was guilty of taking his foot off the accelerator and was duly punished. Rematch anyone? We'll have to revisit the scorecards another time because...
115-114 Gomez Jr, 114-114, 114-114 majority draw! O'Doherty retains his British and Commonwealth lightweight titles, but the challenger's reaction of pure disbelief tells you the story!
Oooooh... controversial chief support scorecard here! It's why they say don't leave it in the judges' hands...
To that end, Dubois acknowledged he was overweight first time around and guess what? He also came in heavier at 253lbs. Will speed and precision play a factor here?
You heard Hrgovic, right? I can see Wardley warming up backstage hitting pads with Rob Hodgins, but can he stay composed in the fire from arguably the sport's hardest-hitting puncher? We'll see in about half an hour's time.
Hrgovic: You can never write off Wardley
Elsewhere, an interested world heavyweight champion has shared a main event prediction to Queensberry's social channels. Hrgovic (21-1, 16 KOs) will want to avenge his own defeat by Dubois, but knows it's not that simple...
Michael Gomez is outworking him, often first to the punch, outmuscling the champion and making him work harder than he's used to.
O'Doherty finding himself having to box off the back foot and swimming upstream. Uppercuts and a stinging jab are scoring beautifully for the Mancunian, who is relentlessly walking him down. 6-1 down!
As local celebrities and notable names are being interviewed for their predictions ringside, O'Doherty has perhaps won his first round... and he's got a massive second-half to claw back here.
Chief support time... who is Ball backing in the headliner?
If you're following along, just one more fight before the main event! How about time for a prediction from a former world champion?
It's a lightweight scrap, where Louie O'Doherty (12-0, 3 KOs) defends his British and Commonwealth belts against Michael Gomez Jr (23-2, 8 KOs). Here we go then...
Olaniyan does it again!
For more on Olaniyan, read John Evans' feature piece on his time in Liverpool here.
How are you so calm? "I'm confident in my preparation, God gives me the strength to do this so I have nothing to fear. I'm ready for anything me personally, but I'll listen to the team, still serving my apprenticeship. I have the best team in the world with Queensberry, Frank Warren and ERT [Everton Red Triangle] so I'll leave it to them."
"It's what I was made for, these big nights and big events. To be on a card like this is where I wanna be in future, selling out the likes of the O2, [Liverpool] Echo Arena and Croke Park, I can't wait for the main event.
5-0 with five knockouts in just seven months as a pro, he speaks well and is picking a repeat Dubois victory in tonight's main event. During his post-fight interview with DAZN's Anna Woolhouse, he says:
Veteran heavyweight Dan Garber (14-10, 2 KOs) didn't put up resistance but Ireland's 20-year-old heavyweight prospect Adam Olaniyan dug downstairs and scored two knockdowns en route to a second-round finish.
Jalolov outboxes Dacres after Birchall's big win
It's another feather in the Uzbek's cap. While it wasn't action-packed or particularly exciting, Dacres was unlikely to truly press him enough to get the excellent amateur into a slugfest. Aggressive when he needed to be, now time for another step-up against someone who sets a pace, or at least punches hard enough to make him think more.
Final scorecards: 99-91, 99-90, 99-90: Bakhodir Jalolov (18-0, 15 KOs) bt. Solomon Dacres (10-2, 3 KOs)
The 22-year-old, who won the vacant English featherweight title with a ninth-round stoppage of Ryan Griffiths in March, will look to campaign back down in weight after coming into this one at 135 pounds.
Morecambe southpaw Nelson Birchall (13-0, 10 KOs) promised to be the first to stop Levi Giles (17-4-1, 4 KOs) and did exactly that, scoring a knockdown in three consecutive rounds before referee Sean McAvoy had seen enough.
Meanwhile there was a finish during the main card opener...
As I type this, double Olympic heavyweight champion Bakhodir Jalolov is cruising to a wide points decision against former English beltholder Solomon Dacres. They're into the eighth frame of their 10-rounder, Jalolov floored Dacres with a lethal left hand three rounds earlier and has been boxing well against the bullish Brit.
Full card results:
- Heavy: Adam Olaniyan TKO2 Dan Garber
- Heavyweight: Bakhodir Jalolov UD10 Solomon Dacres

- Junior bantamweight: Tony Curtis Jr TKO4 Kerim Agius
