Olaniyan adapts to ruthless surroundings at Everton Red Triangle

Every morning, fighters wake up, saunter into the gym, finish their coffees and talk about something they saw online the previous night while they get ready to train.
Boxers at the Everton Red Triangle Gym in Liverpool have a different routine.
Most mornings, E.R.T figurehead Paul Stevenson gathers his men in the gym's office and talks them through tape of boxing’s greatest fighters while they wrap their hands and tie their boots.
Stevenson is one of the most thorough trainers in British boxing and he doesn’t pick the videos at random. Everything is designed to get his fighters thinking.
Irish heavyweight prospect Adam Olaniyan (3-0, 3 KOs) joined the gym after witnessing how Stevenson built fighters like former WBA featherweight champion Nick Ball, bantamweight contender Andrew Cain and brothers Peter and Joe McGrail.
The 20-year-old prospect has also been taken aback by the attention to detail Stevenson shows.
“[Video study] is probably one of my favorite bits,” Olaniyan told The Ring.
“We've been watching a lot of Joe Louis and focusing on little bits of his game and what he does well. We’re just following along from when he won the title all the way up until he got beat. We just follow along and follow these fighters' journeys.”
Gathering the whole team together every morning also strengthens the camaraderie at the tight-knit gym.
Most of the fighters at E.R.T came through the gym’s prolific amateur program and have known each other for years. They are a smart, hard-nosed group who are known for going about their business quietly outside the ring while fighting ruthlessly inside it.
Olaniyan is an outgoing character but he has fit easily into his new surroundings and, slowly but surely, he is starting to become a product of his environment.
“That's one of the things I learned when I first went there,” he laughed. “They’re all just killer mentality. You walk in and you know if someone’s had a bad day. You could tell straight away.
“It’s starting to come out of me though a bit and I don't know whether it's just being around them a lot but I’m a complete different fighter than your typical E.R.T fighter personality-wise you could say.”
The Gerbasi Corner honors longtime Ring Magazine and boxing contributor Tom Gerbasi, who passed away suddenly on Sept. 15, 2025. A 2024 Nat Fleischer Award winner for excellence in boxing journalism, Gerbasi took particular joy in telling the stories of up-and-coming and unheralded prospects in the sport.
