Alan Chaves’ U.S. debut couldn’t have gone any better.
The Argentine southpaw delivered a devastating knockout of Miguel Madueno in the third round in the co-main event of Jarrell Miller vs. Lenier Pero at Fontainebleau in Las Vegas. The stoppage victory was Chaves’ fourth in a row and made him the first fighter to stop Madueno at lightweight.
Chaves (22-0, 19 KOs) entered the bout ranked No. 2 by the WBO, No. 6 by the IBF and No. 13 by the WBC at lightweight.
As the fight neared the midway point of the third round, Chaves threw a straight left hand that connected on the tip of Madueno's chin, and he fell to the canvas. Referee Harvey Dock counted to 10 even though it was clear Madueno (31-5, 28 KOs) was out from the moment the punch connected.
Chaves got off to a strong start as he pressured Madueno, 27, and rocked him with a left hand in the first round. He stayed on the front foot and also found success with his straight left hand and hooks to the body.
Madueno’s last two losses were a unanimous decision setback against former WBO lightweight champion Keyshawn Davis and a seventh-round knockout against Oscar Duarte at junior welterweight in February 2025.
Junior middleweight, 10 rounds: Damian Sosa def. Freudis Rojas by unanimous decision.
Sosa earned the biggest win of his career against the previously unbeaten Rojas. All three judges scored the bout 96-93.
Rojas (15-1, 11 KOs) got off to a good start, outboxing Sosa (27-3, 13 KOs) for much of the first four rounds. Sosa also had his moments, connecting with power shots and finding success punching with Rojas.
The tide turned in Sosa’s favor in the fifth round. He ratched up the pressure and landed a barrage of power shots that bloodied Rojas’ nose and had him on retreat for much of the three minutes. Sosa outlanded Rojas 38 to 13 in power shots in the fifth round.
Sosa, of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, didn’t slow down in the sixth, as he dropped the southpaw from Las Vegas with a left hook to the body. He continued to pick up the pace and continued to batter Rojas, 27, and had him in trouble as the round came to a close.
It was much of the same for the rest of the fight, as Rojas was constantly retreating while Sosa, 29, connected with power shots to the head and body. Rojas tried to fight back but couldn’t sustain any success, as Sosa made him pay for his troubles with his nonstop pressure and volume.
Sosa outlanded Rojas 283 to 154, according to CompuBox.
Junior middleweight, 8 rounds: Nishant Dev def. Juan Carlos Guerra Jr. by 2nd-round TKO
Dev (6-0, 4 KOs) made quick work of Guerra (6-3-1, 2 KOs), stopping him with three seconds left in the second round.
The 2024 Indian Olympian dropped Guerra with a straight left hand to the temple late in the second round. Dev stayed on the offensive. And as he threw a flurry of punches with Guerra’s back to the ropes, referee Al Huggins stopped the fight.
Junior featherweight, 8 rounds: Angel Barrientes (15-1, 9 KOs) def. Luis Espinoza (10-2, 4 KOs) by unanimous decision (80-72, 80-72, 80-72)
Bantamweight, 6 rounds: Phillip Veila (6-0, 2 KOs) def. Edwin Rodriguez (12-11-3, 5 KOs) by unanimous decision (60-54, 60-54, 60-54)
