You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, the saying goes, but Errol Spence wants to challenge that notion.
Since Spence's amateur days, Derrick James had led his corner. But following his stoppage defeat to Terence Crawford in July 2023, the pair unceremoniously split.
Since then, Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) has been working with Ronnie Shields as he prepares for his comeback fight against Tim Tszyu at Afterpay Arena in New South Wales, Australia, on July 26, live on on DAZN pay-per-view.
It hasn’t been a long partnership, but so far, Spence is loving how things are going.
"I've been feeling good,” Spence said. “Training hard. Super focused. I've been listening to my coach Ronnie Shields and leaving no stone unturned. I love Ronnie's style. Love how he implements game plans. It's been night and day from [previous] fights that l've had."
The former IBF, WBA, and WBC welterweight champion will use his newfound knowledge on Tszyu for their 158-pound catchweight bout.
The Australian has won two straight, and has fought seven times in total since Spence lost to Crawford.
Tszyu (27-3, 18 KOs) suffered three defeats in that time, with two coming via stoppage at the hands of Sebastian Fundora and Bakhram Murtazaliev.
To prevent those outcomes from happening again, Tszyu has worked with several coaches, most recently cutting ties with Pedro Diaz and moving to Jeff Fenech.
Spence has a feeling that Tszyu’s new trainer might add a few wrinkles to his opponent's game, much like what's happening in his current situation. However, if Tszyu comes out like his aggressive self and doesn’t show any new dimensions, Spence has a feeling that he’ll have a great night at the expense of the Australian.
"I've noticed his losses,” Spence continued. “I definitely see the weaknesses and the openings. He has a new coach now and I think they're going to change the game plan up a little bit. If not, I think it might go the same way as his other fights where he gets stopped."
