The world of combat sports will focus their attention on the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt on Saturday as Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KO’s) defends The Ring and WBC heavyweight titles against Dutch kickboxing legend, Rico Verhoeven (1-0, 1 KO).
While many will tune in to the DAZN pay-per-view event out of pure curiosity, one man will be watching the crossover clash with an analytical eye.
Agit Kabayel (27-0, 19 KOs) will be looking for any cracks in Usyk’s game. The German has held the WBC interim title since February 2025 but appears no closer to securing a shot at the 39-year-old.
Derek Chisora has shared the ring with both men. The British veteran thinks that Kabayel will be even further away from his goal on Sunday morning. He is tipping Verhoeven to cause arguably the biggest shock in boxing history.
“I think Usyk loses this fight in Egypt,” Chisora (36-14, 23 KOs) told talkSPORT.
The British veteran didn’t go into depth on how or why 37-year-old Verhoeven will be able to succeed where a host of top heavyweights have failed.
“Just hit the guy,” he said.
Kabayel has forged a reputation as one of the best heavyweights on the planet and some see his energetic style and accurate body punching posing Usyk problems.
Chisora knows that imposing yourself on Usyk is easier said than done. In 2020, he lost a unanimous but competitive 12-round decision to the brilliant Ukrainian.
Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua may have posed him more technical problems but Chisora’s all out aggression and willingness to do whatever it took to “just hit the guy” did force Usyk out of his comfort zone.
As is his way, Usyk figured out a path to victory but Chisora laid a blueprint that nobody else has attempted to follow.
“Everybody is easy for Usyk out there because of the way they train and the way they box,” he said.
“I wasn’t easy because I didn’t have a game plan.
“If you look at Kabayel’s fights, he has to get to you to hurt you. Usyk does not allow that. Usyk moves every time. Every time he chucks a punch, he's moving. Kabayel has to get there to land the way he needs to land but Usyk doesn't let you. He will not allow you to get there.”
It is more than eight years since Chisora lost a majority decision to Kabayel in a European heavyweight title fight. He accepts that the 33-year-old is a totally different proposition these days but doesn’t think he will get an opportunity to test himself against Usyk anytime soon.
“When I fought him was he was running away a lot but now he likes to look for his opponents,” Chisora said.
“Listen, all I'm saying is the kickboxer is going to win it and we're going to see a rematch and by the time he gets his his shot at the title, he'll be 45.”
The Ring's "Glory in Giza" card – headlined by the heavyweight showdown pitting division king Oleksandr Usyk against kickboxing icon Rico Verhoeven - takes place on May 23 at the legendary Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. The event is available on DAZN Pay-Per-View.
