Shadasia Green was the first potential opponent Claressa Shields mentioned after she defeated Franchon Crews-Dezurn in their rematch last month.
Green just hopes the undefeated five-division champion meant she said about them finally fighting. The IBF/WBO super middleweight champ is willing to move up seven pounds to fight for Shields’ IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO heavyweight titles or defend her belts against the most accomplished fighter in the history of women’s boxing.
Shields (18-0, 3 KOs), ranked second on The Ring’s women’s pound-for-pound list, has expressed a willingness to drop down to super middleweight for a fight against Green.
In the short term, Green is focused on facing an opponent Shields dominated last summer, Lani Daniels. Green discussed a potential showdown with Shields during a press conference Friday at Madison Square Garden in New York, where MVP Promotions announced its new broadcast partnership with ESPN and the April 17 card on which Green will battle Daniels.
“I said recently that I would be willing to move up to heavyweight to challenge her for her undisputed title,” Green said. “However, after watching her broadcast she stated that she wanted to come down to super middle, which I have no problem with that, neither. I’m willing to do anything to get the best fights.
“But I don’t know how realistic it is because just recently I heard Shields say she wanted to fight Mikaela Mayer. So, I mean, she has to want it. I want it, but the reality is we both have to come to terms and be willing to fight each other. I’m here. I’m not going nowhere. And I’m looking forward to the future.”
Las Vegas’ Mayer has won world titles in three weight classes, but Shields’ former Olympic teammate must move up almost 10 pounds for their fight. Mayer (22-2, 5 KOs), ranked No. 3 by The Ring pound-for-pound, last competed at the junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds, though Shields said she could come down to “162 or 163” to meet Mayer at a catch weight.
Green (16-1, 11 KOs), of Paterson, New Jersey, will battle New Zealand’s Daniels (11-4-2, 1 KO) in the 10-round co-feature of a card ESPN will broadcast from Madison Square Garden’s Infosys Theater. Alycia Baumgardner (17-1, 7 KOs) is set to defend her Ring, IBF, WBA and WBO junior lightweight titles against Bo Mi Re Shin (19-3-3, 10 KOs) in the 10-round main event.
Green, 36, will fight for the first time since she upset Savannah Marshall (13-2, 10 KOs) by split decision July 11 at Madison Square Garden. England’s Marshall is the only boxer to ever defeat Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who avenged her amateur defeat by beating Marshall unanimously on points in their middleweight title fight in October 2022 at O2 Arena in London.
Daniels, 37, hasn’t boxed since Shields decisively defeated her on all three scorecards July 26 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
Crews-Dezurn is the only opponent to beat Green, who lost their WBC super middleweight championship bout by unanimous decision in December 2023 at Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida. The 30-year-old Shields, of Flint, Michigan, shut out Baltimore’s Crews-Dezurn (10-3, 2 KOs, 1 NC) on all three cards February 22 at Little Caesars Arena.
