Ryan Garcia bit into a cookie and soaked in a champagne celebration in his dressing room after his savory win against Mario Barrios on Saturday night.
Outside of his dressing room, in the bowels of T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the newly crowned WBC welterweight champion ran into Shakur Stevenson and doubled down that they need to fight next.
“Let's do it, just like back in the day,” said Garcia.
“Let's make it happen,” said Stevenson.
While a world of options are now available for Garcia, the main one being a rematch and title unification fight against Devin Haney, Garcia pushed all of his chips in Stevenson’s direction during his post-fight speech after dropping and beating Barrios to headline “The Ring: High Stakes” show.
“Ryan did his thing,” Stevenson said on DAZN. “He wants to fight me, and I want to fight him, so it should be easy to get done. All that I ask is that he's on VADA testing, and everything is good. No cheating involved, and I am going to make easy work out of him.
“I understand [the Haney fight for Ryan, as well], and it's a big fight to make, but I'm in it for big fights, and I am pushing myself. I think me and Ryan is a bigger fight. It will be a tremendous fight.”
Stevenson made his 140-pound debut last month and beat Teofimo Lopez Jr. by a landslide decision to win the The Ring and WBO titles. The only non-negotiable Stevenson has is fighting Garcia at a catchweight of 144 pounds.
“Naw, we're going to meet in the middle,” said Stevenson. “We're two big stars. It's a big fight. We don't need a belt for the fight. He's probably a little bit more confident now that he's a champion. But he's a little late to the party. I don't think the world title is going to make a difference – he's late.”
Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs) and Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs) have history fighting as amateurs a decade ago, and Garcia wants to get his revenge in the pro ranks.
“I’ve been waiting for that rematch since I was in the amateurs,” Garcia told The Ring. “I beat him for sure. He knows when he’s in the ring with me, it ain’t gonna be like what he does to these other guys. I got the same fast twitch. I have the same eye movements. He’s never fought a fighter as quick as him in every way, so we got to see what he could do with me.”
