Abdullah Mason took matters into his own hands.
For almost a full year now, Keyshawn Davis has called Mason out and been far from jovial in his approach, confronting him in person and insisting a fight between them would end badly for the 21-year-old.
That trend continued this week as Mason and Davis were two of four Top Rank-backed fighters in New York to promote their new multi-year promotional deal with DAZN.
"I want to fight you this year," Davis told Mason during a face-to-face exchange. "I would knock you out."
Mason could've gone back-and-forth with Davis and issued his own verbal threats, having seized the WBO title against Britain's Sam Noakes on November 22.
That championship was laid vacant by Davis' weight miss and subsequent cancellation of a proposed defense against Edwin de Los Santos five months earlier, June 7.
Instead, knowing they both share the same manager in James J. Prince, the WBO 135-pound beltholder calmly told the Olympic silver medalist that he recently reached out to him as they try to make the fight materialize.
"I called him and said let’s make the fight happen," Mason replied. "I called him a few days ago."
Last summer, a fight between them appeared likely. Davis (14-0, 10 KOs, 1 NC) and Mason (20-0, 17 KOs) were slated to fight on the same card during Davis' Norfolk homecoming.
Mason, then the WBO's No. 1-ranked contender, was elevated from co-main event to headline attraction and blitzed past Jeremia Nakathila in five rounds after Davis' weight miss saw him stripped. Despite negotiations, De Los Santos' team rejected proceeding with a catch weight.
After a period of self-reflection, Davis has since returned in the weight class above. He scored an impressive stoppage of former title challenger Jamaine Ortiz on his 140-pound debut on Ring 6, preceding Shakur Stevenson's wide win over Teofimo Lopez on Jan. 31.
Davis is The Ring's No. 3-rated junior welterweight for Stevenson's title, though his close friend has already expressed interest in potentially boxing another Top Rank-backed champion in Raymond Muratalla for The Ring title at lightweight.
Mason, still growing into his frame, is aware that he will not be a lightweight forever. When he does decide upon moving up, warm-up fights don't interest him and provided Davis still campaigns at the weight, he wants that assignment first.
"You at 140, when I get there, I’ll catch you," Mason told Davis. "You're gonna be my first fight at 140. I’m a get you, don’t worry."
