Naoya Inoue painted a masterpiece and thoroughly dominated Alan Picasso by unanimous decision on Saturday to headline "The Ring V: Night of the Samurai" show in Saudi Arabia.
The undisputed junior featherweight champion Inoue (32-0, 27 KOs) was awarded a shutout on one scorecard, while Picasso (32-1-1, 17 KOs) mustered a total of four rounds on the remaining two cards.
Inoue was comfortable throughout the clash and out-landed Picasso 328 to 170 while throwing 305 more punches to beat him with ease.
Picasso, however, said he expected even more from “The Monster” Inoue in the toughest assignment of his career.
“It was a difficult fight and a very tough fight. Inoue was very explosive and very quick,” Picasso told The Ring in his dressing room after the fight.
“However, I felt superior in some parts of the last rounds of the fight, but yeah, it was tough. But I expected something tougher from Inoue – more explosive, more powerful … I don't feel defeated, but my dream still goes on to be a world champion. I will get ready and come back stronger.”
Inoue, meanwhile, was incredibly hard on himself while assessing the sixth defense (fourth this year) of his undisputed 122-pound title as a fight with Junto Nakatani now looms for May.
“My performance tonight wasn’t good enough. I could have done better,” Inoue said during his post-fight interview. “I’m glad I won, but I’m really tired. I need some rest … I’ll learn from this and will be much better next time.”
