Whenever Claressa Shields speaks, Alycia Baumgardner can't stop herself from laughing.
In a recent interview on The Last Stand with Brian Custer, undisputed heavyweight champion Shields said Baumgardner has declined and isn’t quite what she used to be while downplaying her overall skills.
Unsurprisingly, those comments have frustrated The Ring and unified IBF, WBA, WBO 130-pound champion. As far as she's concerned, there isn't a single woman worldwide on her level.
"I'm the most skillful woman fighter there is, and that's a fact," Baumgardner responded in an interview posted Monday.
Despite looking sluggish at times in her first appearance of 2025 with a 10-round win against Jennifer Miranda in July, she scored a seventh-round knockdown en route to a comfortable 12-round decision over Leila Beaudoin on December 19, another successful defense of her unified world titles on the Anthony Joshua-Jake Paul undercard.
"I have a better jab than most women, have punching power, great movement. You see that time and time again throughout my fights. I don't take anything she [Shields] says seriously because I can't take her seriously.
Shields, who scored a lopsided points win over unified super middleweight beltholder Franchon Crews-Dezurn in their February 22 rematch, has discussed the possibility of a Baumgardner bout previously.
However, that remains unlikely as the two campaign several weight classes apart and the two-time Olympic champion would want to first entertain a Mikaela Mayer matchup at middleweight.
Nonetheless, Shields wants to see Baumgardner (17-1, 7 KOs) get it on against WBC lightweight champion Caroline Dubois (12-0-1, 5 KOs), who she believes is the superior fighter.
Eventually, they might clash in future but both have upcoming bouts to concern themselves with. Baumgardner is focused on her main event matchup against Bo Mi Re Shin on April 17, two weeks after Dubois faces Terri Harper in a WBC/WBO unification, which has this month been announced to also have the vacant Ring title on the line.
Baumgardner plans on being involved in some of the biggest fights imaginable over the coming years. Whether it's a Dubois fight, a Mayer rematch or even a step through the weights to challenge Shields, the 31-year-old insists she is ready for all comers.
"There is nobody beating me. I am, have been the top dog. I've proven and shown it every time."
