IVB’s main card at San Francisco’s Civic Center Plaza is set in stone.
The card, which it hopes will draw over 132,135 fans to break the world record for the largest crowd ever assembled for a boxing event, will be headlined by WBO World Flyweight Champion Anthony Olascuaga versus Andy Dominguez on July 11. The current record is held by Tony Zale versus Billy Pryor at Juneau Park in Milwaukee in 1941.
The event, billed as "History in the Making," will be streamed on YouTube.
Olascuaga (12-1, 9 KOs), 27, has won seven straight fights since suffering his lone defeat against Kenshiro Teraji in 2023. The Los Angeles native made his fifth successful title defense in his last bout when he stopped Jukiya Iimura in the ninth round on March 15 in Japan.
Olascuaga is The Ring’s No. 3-ranked flyweight.
Dominguez (13-1, 6 KOs), 28, will be making a significant jump in competition. He last fought on July 25, beating Byron Rojas.
Ranked middleweight Vito Mielnicki Jr. will face Gerardo Luis Vergara (21-1, 14 KOs) in the co-feature in a 10-round bout. Mielnicki (23-1, 13 KOs) is ranked No. 2 by the WBO and No. 9 by the IBF and WBC.
Also on the card is Charly Suarez, who will be fighting for the first time since his no-contest against unified IBF and WBO 130-pound champion Emanuel Navarrette last May. The fight went to the scorecards after eight rounds after Navarrette (40-2-1, 33 KOs) couldn’t continue due to a cut that was ruled to be from a headbutt, and he won by unanimous decision. Replays later revealed that the cut came from a punch by Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs, 1 NC), and the result was later overturned to a no-contest.
Suarez, The Ring’s No. 5-ranked junior lightweight, faces Manuel Avila (25-2-1, 9 KOs) in a 10-round bout.
Also on the card is Gurgen Hovhannisyan versus Uila Mauʻu in a matchup of undefeated heavyweights who are 10-0 with nine knockouts. Oscar Bonifacino (4-0-1, 3 KO) versus Raul Escudero (4-0) and Blake Binskin (3-0) versus Dante Paris Ibarra Hernandez (3-1, 3 KOs) round out the rest of the card.
