WBO flyweight titleholder Anthony Olascuaga enjoyed a breakout 2025 and will look to bring that momentum into this year when he defends his title against Jukiya Iimura at the Yokohama Buntai, Yokohoma, on March 15.
The fight was originally scheduled to take place on December 17, only for Iimura to pull out.
The show will be streamed on U-NEXT in Japan, while an American broadcaster and others worldwide have not been confirmed as this story goes to publication.
Olascuaga (11-1, 8 KOs), The Ring's No. 3-rated flyweight, turned professional in 2019 and moved quickly, receiving a late notice call – after only five fights – to step into a world title fight against then-Ring, WBA and WBC 108-pound titleholder Kenshiro Teraji but fell short with a ninth-round stoppage loss.
However, the 27-year-old rebounded by knocking out Riku Kano (KO 3) to win the vacant WBO belt in July 2024 and has since made four defenses, notably beating former world champions Jonathan Gonzalez (TKO 1) and Hiroto Kyoguchi (UD 12).
IImura (9-1, 2 KOs), rated at No. 9 by The Ring at 112 pounds, was stopped in his fourth fight against the more experienced Esneth Domingo (TKO 6) in 2022.
The 27-year-old has since won the Japanese title and made three defenses before claiming the OPBF title, avenging his Domingo loss with 12-round points win last May.
In the evening's co-feature, veteran former world champion Nonito Donaire (43-9, 28 KOs) will get a quick return to action having narrowly come up short against WBA bantamweight ruler Seiya Tsutsumi when he faces Riku Masuda (9-1, 8 KOs), who is 15 years his junior.
Donaire, who is unranked by The Ring, has won world titles at flyweight, bantamweight, junior featherweight and featherweight during a Hall of Fame career. He also holds wins over the likes of Vic Darchinyan (TKO 5), Fernando Montiel (TKO 2) and Toshiaki Nishioka (TKO 9).
He gave Naoya Inoue (UD 12) all he could handle during a thrilling fight in November 2019, before being stopped in two rounds of their June 2022 rematch.
Meanwhile, Knockout CP Freshmart (29-1, 11 KOs) will look to make the first defense of his WBC junior flyweight against former WBO beltholder Shokichi Iwata (15-2, 12 KOs).
Freshmart, who is unranked by The Ring at 108-pounds, was the WBA strawweight titleholder for over eight years. The 35-year-old Thai veteran made 11 defenses before losing to WBO counterpart Oscar Collazo (TKO 7). They also contested the vacant Ring title.
He returned up at 108 pounds and when Carlos Canizales was unable to defend his WBC title due to the political situation in Venezuela, Freshmart bested Junior Zarate over 12 rounds to fill the vacancy on December 4.
Iwata, rated at No. 5 by The Ring at junior flyweight, won Japanese and OPBF titles in just nine fights. However, he fell short when he faced Puerto Rico's wily Jonathan Gonzalez (UD 12) for the WBO title.
The 29-year-old got back in the win column and then bludgeoned Jairo Noriega in three rounds. He subsequently lost to Rene Santiago (UD 12) last March but closed out the year with a win to earn this opportunity.
Lastly, Ring-rated strawweight’s Ryusei Matsumoto (7-0, 4 KOs) and Yuni Takada (16-9-3, 6 KOs) meet in a rematch.
In the first meeting last September a clash of heads left Takada unable to continue. The fight went to the scorecards and Matsumoto picked up the victory by fifth-round technical decision.
