Anthony Olascuaga made the fifth defense of his WBO flyweight crown with a ninth-round stoppage over Jukiya Iimura on March 15.
Olascuaga, The Ring's No. 3-rated flyweight, was expertly jockeyed home by veteran trainer Rudy Hernandez.
"I believe that he's getting better and will be better next time around," Hernandez told The Ring. "He's maturing and self-critiqued himself to a tee [on this performance]."
The American first won the WBO title in July 2024 with a third-round knockout of Riku Kano in only his second bout scheduled for 12 rounds. He's become boxing's most active world champion since and notched a third defense in six months last weekend in the co-main event preceding Riku Masuda's stoppage win over Nonito Donaire.
"Activity matters, the quicker the turnaround, the sharper he is," said Hernandez. "Taking too much time off is for the new generation of people, we're old-school people."
Hernandez is in no rush for the 27-year-old to get some rest and wants another quick turnaround for his client to continue building momentum.
"If we could fight in a month we'd take the fight - activity matters," he said.
"Look up [two-time] Gilberto Roman [WBC] junior bantamweight champion, who would fight 45 days after a title defense. That's a true champion and a work horse."
Olascuaga made a mandatory defense against Juan Carlos Camacho on September 11, so is currently free of any title obligations.
"I don't pick opponents," Hernandez replied when asked what he wants to do next. "Whoever our promoter says we're fighting, that's who we're fighting."
Now though, Hernandez will turn attention back to star pupil Junto Nakatani before his all-Japanese superfight when challenging Ring and undisputed junior featherweight champion Naoya Inoue on May 2.
Nakatani had been training in Los Angeles but returned to Japan and was ringside, watching his gymmate and friend Olascuaga. Earlier this week they headed back to their regular training base and will continue camp there until April 18, after which time they will head home and acclimate before a career-best opportunity two weeks later.
"We're in a big bind and we're shooting for the stars," Hernandez added.
"Inoue is, in my opinion, the best fighter in the world. We have a chance at beating him and we'll train to, whether by decision or knockout. Whichever is good enough for me."
