Boxing has a lengthy history of meaningful fights taking a long time to finally happen.
A potential bout between unified junior lightweight champion Alycia Baumgardner and unified lightweight champ Caroline Dubois is following that same path. Baumgardner’s manager, Keith Connolly, told The Ring that a fight with Dubois was on the table, but they turned it down, citing the money offered versus what they could make for that bout in the future.
“Dubois is building up a profile right now, but there’s also a business aspect to it as well,” Connolly said. “Alycia would fight her tomorrow if the money was right. We’ve been made an offer, we looked at that offer, and it wasn’t the money we were expecting. Why would you fight somebody now for money that you don’t think is worth it, when you can maybe get two to three times the amount a year from now?”
Detroit’s Baumgardner, 32, and London’s Dubois, 25, are both represented by Jake Paul’s MVP Promotions, which has exclusive content deals with ESPN in the United States and Sky Sports in the UK.
Baumgardner (18-1, 7 KOs) is a former undisputed 130-pound champion. She gave up the WBC belt in September because the sanctioning body won’t allow women to fight three-minute rounds. The Fremont, Ohio native hasn’t fought above 130 pounds since 2021.
Baumgardner has fought three-minute rounds in each of her last two fights. She won those bouts by unanimous decision – over Leila Beaudoin in a 12-round fight December 19 and Bo Mi Re Shin in a 10-rounder April 17.
Dubois (13-0-1, 5 KOs) asserted herself as the top lightweight in the world when she beat Terri Harper by unanimous decision April 5 to become The Ring, WBC and WBO champion.
Two-time heavyweight champ Daniel Dubois’ younger sister is set to return to the ring August 29. She’ll face Amelia Moore (4-0, 1 KO) in the co-main event of MVPW 06 at bp pulse LIVE in Birmingham, England.
That card will be headlined by the 154-pound title unification bout between WBA/WBC champ Mikaela Mayer (22-2, 5 KOs) and WBO champ Chantelle Cameron (22-1, 8 KOs).
Even with a fight between Baumgardner and Dubois appearing to be an afterthought for now, it hasn’t stopped Baumgardner and Dubois from trading words in person and on social media. Dubois recently called for Baumgardner to face Elif Nur Turhan (14-0, 8 KOs), The Ring’s No. 1-ranked lightweight contender and IBF titleholder, while Dubois would face Stephanie Han (13-0, 3 KOs), The Ring’s No. 4-ranked lightweight and WBA titleholder.
If that happened, and Baumgardner and Dubois won, it’d set the stage for them to meet for the undisputed lightweight title, adding another layer to their grudge match. With Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano planning to retire in the near future, the winner of Baumgardner versus Dubois would emerge as one of the faces of women’s boxing.
Connolly remains hopeful that a bout with Serrano or Taylor could come to fruition for Baumgardner.
Brooklyn’s Serrano (49-4-1, 32 KOs), a seven-division titleholder, is the unified featherweight champion. Ireland’s Taylor (25-1, 6 KOs), the unified 140-pound champion, will face Flora Pili in what’s being billed as the final fight of her celebrated career September 5 at Croke Park in Dublin.
Serrano and Taylor memorably boxed three times, with the latter emerging victorious on each occasion.
“She is the star of women’s boxing right now, once Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano leave,” Connolly said of Baumgardner. “Since they’ve had three fights, and we know they’re not going to fight a fourth time, it’s pretty obvious that [Baumgardner is] the one going forward.
“It’s disappointing that we couldn’t get one of those mega fights for her, but it’s not over yet. Those girls haven’t retired yet. Boxers have a tendency to come back once they retire, so we still are hopeful for one of those mega fights in the next year or two.”
