Ben Whittaker’s focus is on Richard Rivera at the moment, but he also has an eye on the future.
The 2020 Olympic silver medalist is making his U.S. debut against Rivera on the Xander Zayas-Jaron Ennis card Saturday night at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on DAZN Pay-Per-View.
According to oddsmakers, Whittaker should win handily. There'll be demand for him to face a live dog for a change.
Anthony Yarde, a three-time light heavyweight title challenger, has been mentioned as a possible foe. And Whittaker is open to facing his fellow Englishman, who would present his toughest test to date.
“That’s a very good name,” Whittaker told The Ring. “I got a lot of respect for him. He’s done good things, but I think I would beat him.”
Yarde (27-4, 24 KOs) is recovering after getting steamrolled in his last bout against David Benavidez, who stopped him in seven rounds in November. The 34-year-old needs a big win to keep his name viable.
Whittaker needs a next-level victory to quiet his doubters. A victory over Yarde could be a statement.
“It would be a good fight,” Whittaker said. “Young pup versus the older pup. I think it would be good.”
