LAS VEGAS – David Benavidez was more than comfortable Friday coming in well below his contracted weight limit for the first time in his 12-year professional career.
The unbeaten WBC light heavyweight champ stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale at 196.8 pounds, three-plus under the cruiserweight cap of 200 pounds, for his division debut against Gilberto Ramirez on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.
Ramirez, who weighed exactly 200, will defend his WBA and WBO belts against Benavidez in the main event of a pay-per-view show Amazon’s Prime Video and DAZN will distribute in the United States ($79.99).
Phoenix’s Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs), also a former WBC super middleweight champ, will compete above the light heavyweight limit of 175 pounds for the first time. Mexico’s Ramirez (48-1, 30 KOs) is 4-0 in cruiserweight fights since October 2023.
DraftKings lists Benavidez, 29, as almost a 4-1 favorite to become champion in a third weight class. He is ranked No. 7 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list and is our No. 1 contender for Dmitry Bivol’s Ring light heavyweight title.
Armando Resendiz and Jaime Munguia also made weight Friday morning for the co-feature before Benavidez challenges Ramirez.
Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) officially weighed 167, one less than allowed in the super middleweight division. Munguia was slightly heavier, at 167.4.
Resendiz, of Guayabitos, Mexico, will make his first defense of the WBA 168-pound crown against Tijuana’s Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs).
Benavidez, Ramirez, Resendiz, Munguia and all other fighters on the undercard will participate in a ceremonial weigh-in scheduled to start at 1 p.m. PT at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
