Bilal Fawaz made a successful first defense of his British and Commonwealth junior middleweight titles by stopping Ryan Kelly at Wolverhampton Civic Hall in England.
In this evening’s main event, Conah Walker will fight Sam Eggington in a 153 pound catchweight fight. The event is being broadcast globally on DAZN.
The charismatic Fawaz (12-1-1, 3 KOs) took offense at Kelly’s pre-fight confidence and vowed to make him regret signing a contract for the fight.
Fawaz is an unorthodox box of tricks, but Kelly is a solid operator who is much better than his record suggests, and he quickly worked out how to get close to his 38-year-old opponent.
Fawaz is a self assured character with total belief in his ability and fitness and began to put his punches together. He hurt Kelly (20-7-1, 8 KOs) with his accurate combination punching in the fourth and looked to be on the verge of a stoppage win in the fifth when he pinned Kelly against the ropes and unleashed a seemingly endless barrage of punches.
Cut over the right eye, Kelly refused to fold but although he hurt Fawaz with the occasional right hand, the champion maintained a higher work rate and enjoyed more sustained periods of success, although he has a strange habit of stepping off and showboating when he has his opponent hurt.
Kelly was being regularly hurt and his output began to drop off. With the fight slipping rapidly away, he stayed on his stool after the ninth round.
AYTON REMAINS UNBEATEN
Exciting featherweight Tiah Mai Ayton (6-0, 5 KOs) took apart the determined, but outclassed Stevi Levy (15-5, 2 KOs) inside four rounds.
Ayton couldn’t miss Levy with her right hand and a short uppercut, and although she was sometimes guilty of loading up and looking for big shots, she hurt Levy in every round.
Early in the fourth, Ayton sensed Levy was ready to go and cut loose. Levy’s corner quickly threw in the towel and the fight was rightly stopped.
RYAN SCORES QUICK STOPPAGE
Shannon Ryan (11-1, 2 KO’s) won the Commonwealth super flyweight title by stopping Nicola Hopewell (8-2, 1 KO) in the second round. Ryan was too quick and explosive from the opening bell and when she dropped Hopewell with a with a hard right hand, the fight was quickly waved off.
BURROWS WINS DEBUT
Harley Burrows (1-0) made a successful professional debut by outpointing Lewis Howells (3-8) at super middleweight. The 19-year-old southpaw dropped Howells with a body shot in the second round, but couldn’t find a finish, and had to settle for a four round decision victory. The score was 40-35.
Other results from the Matchroom card:
Junior Middleweight: Junaid Bostan (11-1-1, 8 KOs) def. Mohammed Graich (12-5-1, 6 KOs) by eight round decision.
Junior Lightweight: Louie Ward (2-0) def. Jesus Carrasco (2-4-2) by four round decision.
