NEW YORK – Derek “Bozy” Ennis doesn’t think there is anything Xander Zayas can do Saturday night to avoid what he views as an inevitable ending to his fight against Ennis’ son.
It would be safer for Zayas, according to Jaron Ennis’ father/trainer, to approach the former Ring, IBF and WBA welterweight champ cautiously in their 12-round main event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. If Zayas insists on attempting to impose his size and will on Ennis, though, the man who taught the challenger how to fight doesn’t think their bout will last all that long.
“It all depends on how Xander’s coming, if he gonna box or if he coming straight at us,” Bozy Ennis said during a press conference Thursday at Barclays Center. “We got something for him either way. … If he’s coming forward and putting pressure, like I seen him fight a few other guys, it ain’t going the distance. It’s not gonna last that long. If he gonna get out there and box, it’ll probably last for maybe six, seven rounds, something like that, eight rounds. You know what I mean? Other than that, it’s over.”
Zayas naturally didn’t divulge anything regarding strategy.
His trainer, Javiel Centeno, did indicate that the 23-year-old champion will take a strategic approach against the multidimensional Ennis. Like Zayas, Centeno senses Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs, 1 NC) and members of his team mistakenly think this will be a relatively easy fight for the Philadelphia native.
“Yeah, well, you know, that’s easy to say,” Centeno said. “But we’re gonna go in there as a team and be smart, be smart about this fight.”
Zayas moves effectively, is technically sound and has displayed durability during a six-year professional career that began when he was 17.
Bozy Ennis expressed respect for the defending champion. He just thinks his son’s superiority will become obvious quickly in a bout DAZN will stream to subscribers of its Ultimate plan and on pay-per-view to non-subscribers.
“Boots fights inside and outside,” Bozy Ennis said. “So, whatever Xander wanna do, Boots can do.”
The Puerto Rican-born, South Florida-based Zayas (23-0, 13 KOs) has impressively won world titles in each of his last two bouts. He is well aware, of course, that Ennis, who turned 29 on Friday, is more dangerous and diverse than the opponents he out-pointed to win the WBO and WBA titles – Mexico’s Jorge Garcia (34-5, 27 KOs) and Germany’s Abass Baraou (17-2, 9 KOs).
“[I have to] be smart and have fun, like I always do,” Zayas said. “Be smart, have fun, have a smile on my face, and break him down little by little.”
