Pacquiao says Mayweather is scared of losing as Tuesday deadline looms

Manny Pacquiao is still uncertain if his announced fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. will move forward as planned on September 19 at Sphere in Las Vegas.
Netflix announced the rematch on February 23, three days after Mayweather announced he’d be making a comeback as a professional. But on March 28, Mayweather cast doubt on the sequel by labeling it an exhibition without a firm location.
“That's not what we signed. We signed for a real fight. He got his advance. Why is he announcing this propaganda exhibition?” Pacquiao said on Monday's episode of “Inside The Ring” on DAZN.
“For me, he cannot get out of his contract because he is going to face a lot of consequences if he doesn't fight and fails his commitment.
“I think he's scared of losing. That's his leverage, to go around and have exhibitions because of his undefeated record. If that record will be ruined, what else will he be able to leverage?”
Jas Mathur, the CEO of Pacquiao’s promotional company, joined the Hall of Fame fighter on the show and reiterated that Mayweather signed multiple contracts that indicated the meeting was a professional fight.
“We're not interested in an exhibition, Netflix is not interested in an exhibition, no one is interested in an exhibition,” said Mathur.
Mathur said attorneys from all parties are currently in communication and that there is a hard deadline of Tuesday, April 14, to reach a resolution.
"As long as he's got smart people around him that can see the size of the opportunity, then they can make him a lot of money – more money than he has made in the last five years,” said Mathur, who previously had a working relationship with Mayweather through his company, Limitless X Holdings.
"Better sense will prevail here, we hope it will ... What can we do if he chooses to sit home and not step in the ring? There is a limit to how far we can control the situation. All we can do is be proactive on our side and think far ahead and be steps ahead.”
Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KOs), meanwhile, said the Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) rematch now stands as the most significant fight of his Hall of Fame career.
“This is the most important fight of my career because a lot of people are like, ‘Who is the greatest?’” said Pacquiao. “Mayweather won the fight [in 2015 via unanimous decision by] running around.”
The 47-year-old Pacquiao returned from a four-year retirement in July and fought to a majority draw against then WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios.
Mayweather, 49, has not fought professionally since 2017 but has engaged in several high-profile exhibitions. Mayweather also has exhibitions scheduled against Mike Tyson in the Congo and kickboxer Mike Zambidis in Greece before the Pacquiao sequel, but little details have been announced around the encounters.
“It doesn't matter if you are an undefeated fighter,” said Pacquiao. “What I can say is that he's a self-proclaimed GOAT. Because he cannot even claim in which part he's the only. There are many fighters who retired undefeated. But I can claim some of those, the only eight-division champion and only fighter who became a champion in four different decades. But I am not raising my own chair. I let the fans decide.”
