Chantelle Cameron fears Mikaela Mayer’s history on British soil could sway judges in the American’s favor on August 29.
The WBO junior middleweight champion faces WBA and WBC titlist Mayer in a unification clash at Birmingham’s BP Pulse Arena.
For California-born Mayer (22-2, 5 KOs), it is the chance to exorcise the ghosts of two split decisions that went against her in the UK. First, she lost in London against Alycia Baumgardner in October 2022 before Natasha Jonas also got the nod in Liverpool 13 months later.
Mayer has not boxed in the UK since, her back-to-back wins over Britain’s Sandy Ryan took place in New York and then Las Vegas before she beat Mary Spencer in Quebec, Canada last time out.
But, far from enjoying home advantage, Cameron fears that Mayer’s bad luck with the judges in Britain might actually work against her in this fight.
“I just hope they don’t job me,” Cameron told The Ring. “I know that Mayer has been very unlucky in the UK, boxing twice here and losing both on a split.
“So now I see people banging on about it being third time lucky for her but I just think ‘what about me?’
“Who knows what people are thinking. Maybe they are thinking she can’t lose another close one. So that’s when I hear ‘third time lucky.’ I just hope that if this is a close fight, nobody is feeling sorry for Mayer.
“Let’s just have a fair fight. No being biased, no favoritism. Let’s just have a good, fair fight. I’m sure Mayer would feel the same way. I just want a clear win, I don’t want anyone talking about a robbery afterwards.”
Having boxed over 10 three-minute rounds in her last fight, when she claimed Mayer’s old WBO junior middleweight title via unanimous decision over Michaela Kotaskova in April, Cameron will face Mayer over 10 twos.
However, Cameron says she only accepted the format because she did not want to miss the opportunity to fight “pound-for-pound star” Mayer.
The two-weight world champion had previously vacated the WBC title because the sanctioning body would not allow her to box over three-minute rounds. But she made an exception this time, and will once again challenge for the green and gold belt on August 28.
“I never wanted to go back to twos,” Cameron said. “I’m only going back to two-minute rounds to fight Mayer but after this fight I won’t go back to twos.
“It's because of Mayer and the fact that she's a pound for pound star that I'm not going to lose out on a fight because she won't do three-minute rounds. I'd be an idiot. So I'm doing the two minute rounds for Mayer because she has the WBC belt and wants to go for it.
“I'm still an advocate for three-minute rounds and that’s what I want to be boxing over going forward."
