Chantelle Cameron had a very simple message for Mikaela Mayer as the rival junior middleweight champions came face-to-face ahead of their 154-pound unification fight.
“Let’s go and grab female ‘Fight of the Year,’ ” Cameron said.
Cameron will aim to add Mayer’s WBC and WBA belts to her own WBO title when the two meet over 10 two-minute rounds Saturday night at bp pulse LIVE in Birmingham, England. The vacant Ring title will also be on the line.
Their fight will be broadcast on Sky Sports in the UK and streamed on ESPN+ in the United States.
Despite holding home advantage over Las Vegas’ Mayer, Cameron is the betting underdog. The 35-year-old Northampton native is no stranger to upsetting the odds, though.
Back in May 2023, she traveled to Dublin and produced an outstanding display to outpoint the great Katie Taylor by majority decision and win The Ring, IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO junior welterweight titles.
Mayer (22-2, 5 KOs), a three-weight champion, represents a totally different challenge, but Cameron (22-1, 8 KOs) has always wanted to test herself against the best and is prepared for a tough night against a fighter she admires.
“I think Mikaela is very good and that’s why I’ve always wanted this fight,” Cameron said. “I think she’s brilliant and I’m actually a fan of hers. Even though I’m coming up against her, I’d watch Mikaela and enjoy her fights. That’s why I want to fight her, because I want to fight the best. I think our styles are going to jell very well.
“I wouldn’t rate her [against her previous opponents] because I think styles make fights. Obviously, I boxed Katie Taylor, but Mikaela’s style is so different to Katie Taylor and I’m not going to make a rating. It’s all about the styles and I think me and Mikaela, our styles just jell for a really good fight.”
As well as deciding the best junior middleweight in women’s boxing, their fight will also have a major impact on The Ring’s pound-for-pound rankings.
Taylor, ranked No. 1 by The Ring, set to retire after she fights Flora Pili for 140-pound supremacy on September 5, the winner can expect to climb the standings. Mayer, 36, is currently ranked at No. 3, two spots atop the fifth-ranked Cameron.
Cameron has been a mainstay of the pound-for-pound list for years, yet she is often overshadowed by fighters like Taylor, five-division champ and second-ranked Claressa Shields, and Mayer.
She insists that the lack of acclaim and attention doesn’t affect her and that she is content to let her fists speak for her.
“I don’t really care, if I’m honest,” Cameron said. “All I’ve got to do is turn up and then when I’ve got to perform, I perform. I think everything else is just noise, so as long as I know that I’m winning my fights, and I’m doing what I want to do and what I set out to do, everything else is just noise. I just take it in my stride.”
