Rarely are fights big enough to warrant a name fitting of the magnitude of the event.
Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford is one of the few exceptions.
During a roundtable conversation between His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, The Ring’s Mike Coppinger and Rick Reeno broke down the latest press conference between Crawford and Alvarez in New York. Alalshikh revealed the name he came up with for the fight, and Reeno said it at the end.
“There Can Only Be One,” Reeno said. “The two best fighters of this era. The two best guys out there pound-for-pound, but only one of them is walking away with this [$188,000] belt, with the big win and that's why there can only be one.”
Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) and Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) are the two most accomplished fighters of their era, and the winner on Sept. 13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will have stamped their place as the best. Canelo is a four-division champion, including a two-time undisputed super middleweight champion. He accomplished the feat for a second time on May 3 when he defeated William Scull for his IBF title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, setting the stage for the superfight vs Crawford.
Crawford is also a four-division champion and two-time undisputed champion, having won all four belts at junior welterweight and welterweight. He also added the WBA junior middleweight title to his resume in his last fight when he defeated the previously undefeated Israil Madrimov on Aug. 3 in Los Angeles, California.
Tensions have begun to rise between Canelo and Crawford as the two needed to be separated during their staredown following the press conference in New York on Saturday. If the fight lives up to the buildup and the Hall of Fame-worthy careers they’ve put together, the one who emerges victorious will have left no doubt that they’re this era's best.
