There wasn’t much drama for Bruce Carrington in the first defense of his WBC featherweight title.
Carrington coasted to a unanimous decision over Rene Palacios on Saturday at Wolstein Center in Cleveland. The bout was part of the inaugural rendition of “The Fight” series on DAZN and TNT, which is headlined by Abdullah Mason (20-0, 17 KOs) defending his WBO lightweight title versus Albert Bell (28-0, 9 KOs).
Judge David De Jonge scored it 118-110, while Omar Mintun had 117-111. Ben Rochester had it the closest of the three at 116-112.
After the win, Carrington called for a unification title bout in his next fight.
Carrington (18-0, 10 KOs), The Ring’s No. 3 featherweight, controlled the fight by outboxing Palacios off the back foot with his back to the ropes. The 29-year-old from Brooklyn picked the Mexican southpaw apart with his jabs and straight right hands. Carrington led 40-36 across all three judges' scorecards, which was revealed during the fifth round because of the WBC’s open scoring.
Palacios (19-1-1, 10 KOs) started to increase the pressure in the second half. It led to him having one of his best rounds in the seventh, as he landed power shots to the body and a solid left upstairs late.
Controversy came in the eighth round when Carrington was dropped by a right hook, but referee Harvey Dock ruled it a slip. Palacios’ punch landed on the back of the head, but Carrington ducked into it.
Carrington led 79-73 through eight rounds.
The most dramatic moment came in the final minute of the 11th when Palacios, 25, hurt Carrington with a pair of left hands to the liver. He pressed the action and tried to target the body, but Carrington stayed on the move and held on when necessary to survive the round.
Knowing he needed a stoppage, Palacios couldn’t find the one shot required to pull off the upset.
