If the name Koen Mazoudier didn’t ring a bell when he was announced as Jermall Charlo’s next opponent, don’t worry – Charlo was unfamiliar with him, too.
“I don't even know how he looks,” Charlo said on Australian television during a satellite interview on a Main Event on Kayo Sports program.
Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) and Mazoudier (15-4-1, 6 KOs) will get to know each other much better when they square off for a 10-round super middleweight bout on July 26 in Sydney (July 25 in the U.S. on Prime Video Pay-Per-View) as the co-main event with Errol Spence vs. Tim Tszyu.
Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) is a known commodity in the sport, even if the former junior middleweight and middleweight champion has been mostly inactive this decade by fighting just four times.
The 36-year-old Houstonian last fought in May of last year, stopping Thomas LaManna. And that followed a 19-month layoff. If Charlo stays active, he shouldn’t have any issues graduating to more significant and lucrative matchups than Mazoudier in a deep weight division.
Mazoudier (15-4-1, 6 KOs) is a 30-year-old from Blacktown, New South Wales, who is unknown outside of the Australian boxing circuit. He's also a junior middleweight who’s been tasked to step up two weight classes nearly two years after getting stopped by prospect Nikita Tszyu, the younger brother of Tim.
Charlo is expecting a tough tussle despite being an overwhelming favorite to win the fight.
“We know that Australians are warriors,” Charlo said. “They bring a big fight and brutal matches, from all of the great Australian champions. I'm expecting an all-out war myself. So this should be one for my career.”
Despite respecting fighters from the land down under, Charlo is still confident he’ll get past Mazoudier without much issue.
“I doubt if he's going to be able to switch up his style and show me something I've never seen before,” Charlo said. “I don't study my opponents. I'll make the adjustments once I get in the ring.”
