For the last two years, Sebastian Fundora’s and Keith Thurman’s paths have been intertwined without stepping into the ring to face each other.
That’ll change on Saturday when Fundora defends his WBC 154-pound title against Thurman at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Prime Video PPV. Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) will be making the third defense of his WBC title, while Thurman (31-1, 23 KOs) is seeking to become a two-division world champion.
Fundora and Thurman were originally scheduled to fight on October 25, but a hand injury forced the former to withdraw and the entire card was postponed.
In March 2024, Thurman was scheduled to face then-WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu but withdrew due to a biceps injury. That led to Fundora stepping in on less than two weeks’ notice, and he upset Tszyu by split decision to win the WBO and vacant WBC titles in one of the bloodiest fights you’ll ever see.
Fundora, who stands at 6-foot-5-½, defended both titles with a fourth-round stoppage of Chordale Booker last March, then vacated his WBO title to rematch Tszyu and stopped him in the seventh round on July 19.
Thurman, a former unified world welterweight champion, has only fought four times since the beginning of 2019. He stopped an overmatched Brock Jarvis in the third round in Australia last March.
Here are what the CompuBox stats say about Fundora versus Thurman.
Fundora in his last six fights:
- 20.4 punches landed per round
- 70.9 punches thrown per round
- 5.1 jabs landed per round
- 33 jabs thrown per round
- 15.2 power punches landed per round
- 37.9 power punches thrown per round
Thurman in his last four fights:
- 17.3 punches landed per round
- 57.5 punches thrown per round
- 3.9 jabs landed per round
- 28.1 jabs thrown per round
- 13.3 power punches landed per round
- 29.4 power punches thrown per round

Thurman is more efficient in total punches and power shots landed per round. He connects with 30.1 percent of his total punches and an impressive 45.2 percent of his power shots, whereas Fundora lands 28.8 percent of his total punches and 40.1 percent of his power shots.
Fundora’s volume is vital to his offense. His 70.9 punches thrown per round rank 10th among championship fighters, and 33 jabs thrown per round rank seventh. He has also averaged 15.2 power shots landed per round.
Fundora is there to be hit. Opponents have landed 35.8 percent of their power shots, which is 11.3 per round. For Thurman, opponents connect with 31.4 percent of their power shots, which is eight per round.
Neither guy emphasizes going to the body. For Fundora, 19.2 percent of his punches landed are to the body, compared to 18.3 percent for Thurman. Attacking the body could be a more focal point for both fighters, with Thurman potentially using it to negate his eight-inch height and 11-inch reach disadvantage. Thurman has been hurt to the body on numerous occasions, which should make that a target for Fundora throughout the fight.
Whether Thurman can hurt will likely be one of the deciding factors, if not, the thing that determines the tenor of the fight. If he can’t get Fundora to respect his power or at least slow him down, his volume and pace could prove to be too much.
