Conor Benn has called into question Ryan Garcia's professionalism ahead of his world title fight with Mario Barrios on February 21.
Benn does believe Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) is a positive for the sport, but has queried whether his life away from the ring will take its toll once again as he prepares to face Barrios in the main event of "The Ring: High Stakes".
“I think Ryan Garcia is great for boxing,” Benn said on the Mr. Verzace Podcast.
“I think he’s a liability, I think he’s a loose cannon, I think he’s unpredictable, you could say unprofessional but ultimately, he’s sheer entertainment. He’s gifted, great hand speed, he’s athletic, he’s young so he’s good for the sport of boxing and I would tune in to watch a Ryan Garcia fight.”
Benn will be ringside later this month as Garcia challenges Barrios for his WBC welterweight title at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Ranked No. 1 with the WBC at 147 pounds, Benn (24-1, 14 KOs) is eyeing the winner.
Benn, 29, spent 2025 embroiled in a feud with generational rival Chris Eubank Jr, losing the the first clash, which won The Ring's Fight of the Year, before winning the rematch in dominant fashion. Both fights took place at 160 pounds but now Benn wants to win gold back at welterweight.
Garcia hasn’t won a fight since 2023 and was last in action on The Ring's Times Square card in May of last year, where he lost by unanimous decision to Rolando "Rolly" Romero.
Benn isn’t too sure who will come out on top between Garcia and Barrios, but believes if anyone's to do it, it's Garcia, as long as he's focused, which he may not have been ahead of his fight with Romero.
"[Barrios] has true Mexican blood, fights with heart, pride and fights for his country, fights for something more than clicks or views, it's hard to pick who's gonna win,” Benn said.
“Ryan should win really but will he? Rolly is a good fighter, but you can tell the kind of life [Garcia] had been living in between the [Devin Haney and Romero] fights. It has its toll, going through what he went through, his whole case, I understand the pain. Mine was more public, the way I handled it, maybe he was just as emotional as me but behind closed doors, maybe he couldn't handle it and had to party ... I understand. Maybe he wasn't training, he wasn't in the gym and it showed in his fight against Rolly."
DAZN will distribute “The Ring: High Stakes” to non-subscribers on pay-per-view for $69.99 in the United States and £24.99 in the United Kingdom. The show is included in DAZN’s Ultimate monthly plan for subscribers ($44.99; £24.99).
